OK...I have a nice SAR-2, complete with a 74 type muzzle break, I have refinished the wood, dyed to the iodine orange, shellaced, the whole nine yards, even replaced the smooth buttplate with a proper corrugated one. But the solid Romanian wood stocks, without the side cuts on the butt, and the sling swivel mounted to the bottom is driving me crazy..its just not right for a 74 clone.... A real Russian laminate 74 set up will cost more than the gun did...so I was thinking of going with the Ironwood Designs laminate set....At least it has the proper butt cuts and side mounted swivel. Finishing it will be no problem, and I have all the proper and neccessary metal from my current furniture. So I'd like to know from guys who have used Ironwood, how do you like them? How is the fit? The swell on the lower handguard looks a little "soft" not real sharp and angular like on actual Russian HG's...does it look OK though when finished? Basically should I get a set? |

Ironwood stocksets come oversized in order to fit a large range of guns. I have a full laminate set on my Bulgarian '74. Likes: Solid construction. I was able to fit it perfectly to my gun. Dislikes: Upper laminate handguard grain is improper and prone to cracking. Notice how in combloc UHG laminates the laminations are invisible because they're wrapped concentric to the gas tube. This is a lot stronger than the way Ironwoods does it. It requires a LOT of fitting. If you're going for that shaped Russian look be prepared for a lot of work. I still think my lower HG is a bit fat. Schulze |

Thanks for the responses guys, I appreciate the input. I do have a spare Russian upper handguard, so I could use that instead of the ironwood.....I wouldn't use the PG, as a bakelite is proper....and I could get a decent laminate lower handguard from K-var, I got one for an AKM clone, and it was pretty nice... Maybe the thing to do is just buy a buttstock and work on it..... |
