As a man with a background in mechanical engineering, it always makes me cringe when I see metal wear/mushrooming in a piece of machinery....which leads me to this question.  Is this "hammering" wear on the rear of the carrier where it contacts the hammer during operation normal?  This rifle hasn't seen that many rounds, but while cleaning the rifle I noticed this.  Is this just a normal trait of the Kalashnikov?  Hopefully it's just my OCD kicking in....
Thanks gentlemen!
Phillip

It's fine.

FWIW my WASR 10/63 has peening like that.

Its not from the hammer - it happens when the bolt carrier tail slams into the rear trunion. I put in a new recoil spring and a buffer because of it.

The bolt carrier tail goes above the rear trunion.  Take any AK, remove the recoil spring, and pull the bolt carrier all the way back until it hits the trunion.. you'll see the tail is above the trunion.

This. Definitely not the rear trunnion.

Normal, it from hitting the hammer.  Some do it worse than others.

All of my AK's have wear in that location to some degree.

The dinged tail is from the hammer.  The wear on the side of the bolt is from hitting the rear trunion.   I get the wear on the sides from pulling the bolt carrier back too far when hand charging/cycling and hitting the trunion.

Yep - hammer.

My Romy G has similar deformation on the carrier, but I have not seen any evidence of it yet on my 5.45 Saigas, and there is only slight wear in that spot on my Bulgarian -74. My unbuilt numbers matching Polish AKM kit has some wear on that spot.

What it looks like is paint over zinc parkerizing. It is probably a cheap/military grade paint that's rubbing off, which leads you to think of it has excess wear. Nothing to worry about. You can refinish it later easily with a more durable finish (molyresin, gunkote, duracoat, etc). Cheap rattle can duplicolor 1634 or even appliance epoxy seems to work nicely too. Just take your time.

Parkerizing is probably thin too.

I hope that helps, I'm a bit OCD when it comes to my rifles finishes too. The AK platform I am learning generally isn't known to hold up to being a safe queen.

Caution, the tail is there to help prevent out of battery firing. If the carrier isn't completely closed the tail will keep the hammer from hitting the firing pin. I would monitor the wear so it doesn't get too excessive. The tail cocks the hammer you may want to check the hammer face for wear.

My Arsenal had wear like that, but maybe more excessive.  I sent it back, and it came home with a new carrier and a hammer with a different profile.
