I just purchased my first rifle. I wanted an AK and decided to drop a little extra money for an SGL-21. I'm new to AK's so I decided to go the safe route and get something with a strong reputation for being awesome.
Anyways, I haven't been out to the range yet, but I did decide to pick up some dummy rounds today to check for proper function. I loaded the dummy rounds into the factory magazine and worked the bolt a few times. The bolt carrier seems to be stopping about a quarter of an inch to the rear of where it stops when the gun is completely empty. I checked and the dummy round is seating properly into the bolt face.There also aren't any obstructions in the breech of the barrel preventing the dummy from seating properly. The bolt does not appear to be rotating closed all of the way hence preventing the carrier from coming all the way forward. looking through the magazine well, the bolt is rotating about 75 degrees instead of the full 90. After removing the top cover and the recoil spring, I noticed that the angled surface protruding out the back of the bolt carrier is preventing the hammer from hitting the firing pin, which obviously means that this thing isn't coming home properly. Also, it takes a somewhat significant amount of extra force to extract the whole thing and pull the bolt handle back. Other than that, it ejects well and feed well. I don't believe it to be defective, because it did come with the factory test target. Unless, of course, it's all a facade, and they ship the same fake target out with every new gun. All and all, it appears to be a great gun and overall I am very satisfied. It just seems like it would be kind of depressing if it blew up in my face when I take it out to shoot it later this week.

| Are you riding the bolt home or pulling back and letting go completely? AK's bolt carriers are known to hang on the hammer, especially when they are new... I am not quite following what you mean though. Also, check that the hammer springs are on the trigger properly. |

The hammer springs are in the correct location. The bolt and carrier are going not above the fcg when it locks up.
The bolt face comes into contact with the rear of the barrel but does not rotate all the way, preventing the carrier from moving all the way forward. Like I said, this is only with these dummy rounds. When the gun is empty, there is no issue at all. I am, however, riding the bolt most of the way. I will try not doing that and see what happens. The first thing I do with any new firearm is field strip - run an oiled patch down the bore - wipe down the bolt/moving parts - and inspect for obvious burrs ,cracks, or dings. Then I lightly lube the moving parts and give it a function check - EMPTY. I have never used "dummy rounds" for this purpose. 
If you want to make sure a live round fits the chamber or the bolt face - do it with the gun DISASSEMBLED.
