| I was wondering which is a better purchase, a "factory-new" Romak III with PSO scope, two mags and some other stuff, or a new bushmaster around the same price. (Around $800) I'm new (and ignorant) to both the world of AK's and AR's so any help will be greatly appreciated. |
| It depends on what kind of shooting you want to do. The Romak III uses a larger cartridge called the 7.62x54R, or 7.62 Russian, and is closer in performance to the 308. The Bushmaster will be a highly accurate rifle in the .223 calber, which is a much smaller cartridge. The Russian isn't as common, but can be found, but is more expensive. The .223 is very common, can be inexpensive or expensive, and there are more accessories for the Bushmaster or it's AK counterpart, the SAR3. The SAR3, if you can find one, is less expensive than the bushmaster and may be more of what you want if you want the AK series. $800 for the Bushmaster is on par with an AR. It all depends on what you have for interests and want to do with the rifle in the end. |

I would differ from chwi548 in that the ammo for the Romak III is not uncommon, and is just about the cheapest large caliber ammo out there. I agree with his other assesments. They are two completely different rifles for dfferent jobs. If you need range or knock down power, the Romak is the way you would want to go. If you are looking for a more general purpose rifle, but with less punch, the .223 is the way to go. What type of shooting do you plan on doing the most? |

the romak-3 is an intermediate range squad level marksman's rifle. not a "sniping rifle" per se, but accurate enough to increase the target engagement range of a group of soldiers....figure 500m or so. you do not state which kind of ar to compare it to, but let's go with a 20" a2. the ar will reach out to 500m, also...just with far less energy. accuracy-wise, a rack-grade ar and a psl/fpk )the military designations for the romak-3) running good ammo will be about the same, for all practical requirements. i would give any accuracy edge, willingly, to the ar though. both rifles are great choices to have in your safe. |
| Primarily, I'm looking for a accurate mid-range rifle to shoot in informal matches and just to have something to wow over. The Romak-3 caught my attention as it was a poor-man's SVD dragunov and it had the AK's action. I just don't know much about it and how accurate it shoots. Also, are DCM bushy's all that great compared to an Olympic Arms PCR series? |

While I really like the Romak, to me, for the type of shooting you will be doing, the AR sounds like a better choice. It will be easier to learn to shoot, and more accurate all things being equal. I'm not a fan of the AR, I am can not help you as to which AR is better. |
