Dumb question time: is there such a thing as a "new" kit, ie all parts brand new, or are kits by definition pieces of previously use guns that have been disassembled or demilled? Also, did kits exist before the federal import limitations on foreign made assault weapons, or are they purely a reaction to laws prohibiting import of new foreign factory made assault weapons? Re: the used guns, trying to figure out whether they are perfectly good guns being disposed on export to raise trade revenues, or are these largely junkers that some overseas military has phased out of their arms rooms in favor of new weapons... Thanks in advance for any information, Tim |

Yes, there have been "new" kits on the market. However....there are a few advantages to a demilled unissued rifle. 1. The headspace issue, on a demilled rifle this is already done for you. 2.drilling of certain critical areas...ie gas ports, and the barrel pin. 3. pin placement canted sights and gas blocks can be a pitfall if not properly aligned. All this considered, an unissued demilled kit is a gift! Assembling an AK takes much more mechanical, machinist experience than an AR. |

Kits come in in dribs and drabs, each load is different. Some of the AMD-65's looked to be brandly new, while most of the russian "PLO" kits looked like crap. The reason they come in kits is that the rifles originally were military weapons with the rock-n-roll switch. The reciever on a weapon like that, new or old, has to be tossed before it's legal in the US, so they strip off the reciever and throw the rest in a bag, or send them out to be rebuilt on civvie legal recievers. Most of the parts kits I've seen have been a single matching gun torn down, not just a bag of spares. Rifles intended from the start as US civvie rifles (like the Romanian SAR and WASR series) come in on a legal reciever and thus don't need to be torn down. The question as to whether they're any good depends on the kits. The AMD kits were nice, same with the Polish and even the romanian military kits were better than your average SAR. Kits are hens teeth right now, but everyone's saying "any day now". AMD kits are out there, but the prices are quite inflated from the $80 I picked my '65 up for. |

Thanks for all the replies. When you order a US built kit rifle - is there a way to maximize the chances of getting all new parts? Especially 5.56 NATO AKs - they aren't issue anywhere, are they? Was thinking those parts must not be used... Thanks again for further thoughts, Tim |
I heard that!!!! |
