| I was reading on the ATF website and it states that it is prohibited to build a semi-auto assualt rifle from a imported parts kit... So does that mean that all those kits on ebay and such are basically ment for refurbishing your gun and legally you cant make another gun?? I was looking forward to building an AK kit and now i am very disapointed. Let me know if there are any loop holes or maybe "non" imported kits availible... |
| Someone else can probably explain a little better than me BUT an AK / FAL are imported and we cant build up the riles as such. So we need to substitute a certain number of "made in the U.S." parts for the original foreign ones. Generally it would be the FCG(3)(H/T/S), gas piston, pistol grip, mag. floor plate, and muzzle brake. Depending on what you are building the US parts vary between 6 and 7. You are usually able to find complience parts set at www.tapco.com |

snake, it IS a very confusing situation. you are not alone. basically, for a stamped receiver ak, you need 5 usa made parts...6 if you use any kind of muzzle attachment (any legal batfe approved brake or compensator). usually, we install 3 usa made fire contol parts; the hammer, trigger and disconnector. these are easy parts to substitute for the commie parts and if you buy the redstararms or k-var trigger group it actually is a big improvement. next, we might choose to add a 3-piece usa made furniture set from k-var or ironwood designs or from wes at soupbowl enterprizes (buttstock, pistol grip and both handguards count as 3 usa made parts). that gives us 6 usa parts right there. also available on the market are various usa made gas pistons and brakes/compensators. |
| About the US parts count: the reason behind replacing "evil" foreign parts with US-made parts is that by reducing the number of foreign qualifying parts to less than 10, you no longer have an imported firearm, but rather an American-made firearm with some imported parts. It is no longer subject to regulations restricting the importation of "non-sporting" firearms. |
