When building an AR, one of the tricks suggested is to coat the barrel extension with red LocTite to help give it a more positive and even bond with the receiver. What I'm wondering is if anyone has tried using red loctite on an AK trunion before riveting/screwing. It seems to me like this would help distribute the strain more evenly along ethe front of the receiver rather than putting all the load on the rivet, and it seems like this would potentially extend receiver and rivet life. Not that AK receivers and rivets tend to die prematurely, but in the case of oblonged holes and unhardened receivers battering of the rivets and holes can be an issue and I can see where using loctite might help minimize that, and in general it could help add rigidity to the receiver. What do you guys think? |
| Im assuming that you already know people loctite their screws in but as far as for the complete trunion I dont know. It surely wouldnt hurt anything but then again I have never heard of this being a problem. I think I read somewhere of someone using JB Weld? It seems like that might work well also especially since its thicker and could fill in little crevices and rough spots. I want to see someone try to put one together with just the trunions glued in with loctite or JB weld and see how many rounds it can go before failing. I saw where someone replaced the rivits with tooth picks and I believe it made it 3-4 rounds before coming apart. |
The one I saw had the rivits drilled out then they broke off some tooth pics and jamed them in the holes. Like I said I believe they got 3-4 rounds off and even after that the gun appeared in tact for the most part but the tooth pics broke. There didnt seem like there were any loose parts flying off like you would think. Im gonna assume the guys doing it had it tied to a tree with a long string tied to the trigger. I know that how I would do it. If I had more time and were curious enough I would probably try it with loctite. It would have to be on a beater parts kit and probably homemade receiver but I bet most of it would be ok even after the rifle failed. I could see it getting pretty tiresome if the rifle just kept going. |

Look at that 3-M addhesive like Clip-Draw uses now, they claim that it gets "tighter" the more it gets worked, I don't believe it, but whatever! I guess if they can build a pistol out of plastic, you could assemble your trunnions to your reciever with addhesive, why not? I don't own a plastic pistol, POS IMO, and I don't plan on "glueing" my next AK together. I encouage someone to try it, even call 3-M and ask them if they really believe thier addhesive is that good, they say it is. |
| Using locktite in the form of cynocrylate (plain old super glue) is a common practice used throughout the aerospace industry manufacturing sector to hold two detail components together in the proper configuration for final riveting or bolt installation. Any type of locktite or super glue will work just fine. |
