Hey Guys!

Nubie first time builder question....... (Yes..... I do have LOTS more reading to do! and am working thru the stickies) I am thinking of picking up a couple of the M-64 Yugo underfolders kits, ( https://www.apexgunparts.com/product_info.php/cPath/51/products_id/820?osCsid=okpjk8m5cmc1dmaiqm606oavp7 )
and building them up! What is the difference between the M64 and M70 (Stamped vs. milled receiver?) I think for my first build, I would rather not mess with building up from flats, and if I am correct that the
M64 is a milled receiver, than one of the ORF or firingline's   Milled 100% receivers is likely the way to go. I think, I have seen guys put together M64's on stamped receivers... if this is possible what are the down sides? (Money is a little tight! so I would like to build on a stamped, rather then milled.... if possible. thinking No Dak Spud's #4 at this point.)
Am I off base with this idea? It seems like the Century Yugos are going in the $700-$800 range and this is a fun and (slightly) cheaper way of putting one together. Any help or advise before I am knee deep, would be appreciated, (Greatly!)

Thanks!
Fred

P.S. I am an M-16 and Beretta armorer (I have built several Ar's from the ground up) and have some limited machining and welding  skills, (If it can't be done with a dremel... it just ain't worth doing!)

I have the same kit on order and am in the process of sorting out what I am going to do with it.

I am leaning to milling down the receiver stubs, and using them as trunions in a stamped Nodak receiver.  I have found a couple examples online of this.  Probably the same ones you have seen.

As near as I can tell the M-92 is the most approprate one to use. If someone has more insight into this please chime in.  From what I have gathered, the #4 isn't the best because of the flared portion near the front.  All the examples I have seen have used flats, so I havn't seen anything definitive on using complete receivers.

I know APEX is suposed to come out with a repair section, and I am well experienced with a mig welder, but I just like the idea of having a pre-made serial numbered reciever.  It also seems like there would be less of a chance of me screwing it up.  I havn't decidided on welding vs riviting the stubs to the stamped receiver.

send it to mat.he is a ffl 007 and he is a expert at rewelding these.it cost about $375 to do,but it is original.cheaper than buying a receiver and rebuilding it youself.

Hey Guys,
Thanks for the replys.... At this point I think I may like to try putting one together myself.... I see that ORF has the M-70 milled receivers for $250. Will these work with the M-64 kits.... or am I barking up the wrong tree?

Thanks and sorry for the dumb, nubie questions!

m64 has a threaded barrel, m70 is a press and pin

Hey John32369,

A screw in barrel would make for easy headspacing, but the ORF M70 receivers would make for an simple build. Is there any reason I couldn't build a M64 parts kit on an M70 receiver.... other then
having to get an press and pin barrel (I guess like a romainian AK barrel).

Also.... does anyone make an receiver that my M64 barrel will simple screw into? That would be the way to go if possible.

Thanks!

could always turn the threads down on the screw in barrel

If you can weld, rebuild plates are available.
Threaded barrels make it much harder to index and headspace.

orf receivers are junk.ask me how i know.use vz58 repair plates or have it rewelded.

O.K guys, I know I am not too bright but  I have spent hours reading,  and am still kinda in the dark on the "Best"  way to make an M-64 kit go bang.... I guess  I have several options....

1. wait till Apex comes out with there Milled receiver repair kit.... (I am  not sure my welding is up to this one)

2. Grind the barrel  trunion and mount it in a No Dak Spud stamped receiver (I am still not sure which is best for this build...or when they will be available again?)

3. Pick up a milled M-70 receiver and have the M-64 barrel turned down to fit. (this is where I am  most leaning now ) Best bang for the buck.

I also found this receiver from firingline that is listed as a "Milled, Screw In, receiver  http://www.firinglineoklahoma.com/akreceivers/underfold.html This "sounds like what I need.... Will this work for an M-64? Anyone know how much?

I hope that I am not annoying anyone with my persistent, dumb, nubie questions...... But I am trying to get this project off the ground and don't want to make any miss steps!

Thanks!

This is the way to go guys, Matt has done many rewelds and they all look great. He repairs lightening cuts and also offers his own finishing of the receiver for an extra $25.

Does anyone else have any ideas about this.... I did come across this build on another site that basically ground down the M-64 barrel trunion to fit in a stamped tapco receiver.....(I am thinking a NoDakSpud, NDS-M92 is what I need), any thoughts?

I am thinking about one of these kits for myself. What do you guys think about building one

on a stamped receiver as mentioned above? Is this a safe method to produce a functional gun?

Also, are the barrels in these kits remotely useable? They lack chrome lining and I suspect

they fired a whole bunch of corrosive ammo during their lifetime. At $220, these kits seem like a

good deal in this climate even though they are war weary!

Hey Riceshooter,

As I mentioned I got two of the Apex kits... generally they are in nice shape and should make good rebuilds.... The rifling on one is tight and it passes the bullet test like it was new... the other is experience and fails the bullet test..... but the rifling looks O.K. It should be an O.K. shooter. But if I could find a better barrel and trunion I would likely swap it out on this one.  The milled sections had lots of meat and clear the folder well,  and even the lightening cut on the front  section of receiver is intact + 1/8 inch to play with. The first run of Apex  milled receiver repar parts, ran out  on Monday....  and are now back ordered for at least a month from wise lite arms.

Thanks for the response. How are you going to build yours? I think the stamped receiver build demonstrated

at AK files seems like a fairly practical and cheap way to construct these milled kits. Also, any word on how the

re-welded receiver rifles are preforming? I am currently looking for a relatively cheap kit for a first build. Its

too bad that the romy kits were snatched up!

I am on the backorder list for the repair sections.... But to be honest I haven't a clue how I am going to build this up...... I have almost no machining skill (This side of a busy dremel tool)
And my welding is at about a pre-school level.... That said, I am a Beretta and colt armorer and have Built (o.K. assembled) many AR-15's..... So basically I am strong of heart, and weak of mind!

I hope, from reading the adventures of others that have traveled this path before me........ that  I won't screw up to badly.....

Pray for me!

yea...m64 will not work with an m70 receiver.  m64 has a threaded barrel...m70 has a press in barrel.  study your options well and remember...building an ak is way different than putting together an ar.
