Around where I live, the gun shops, for some odd reason, seem to only be able to get the underfolder Yugo M70s. I wanted to get a M70B1 to convert to a sidefolder, but I got what I could get. So, my question is, is the trunion on the underfolder strong enough to be drilled & tapped for an Ace side fold mechanism? Or, am I going to have to install their universal rear trunion? If I can do this I will be selling the old stock if anybody's interested. I do plan on keeping the original mechanism so I will still have the sling swivel though, unless somebody has a way that I can ditch it & still have a swivel. |

That's because, for some odd reason, the Yugos never made a sidefolding AK of any kind, ever. So if you put a sidefolding stock on this thing, the 1.5 inch holes going straight through the sides of the receiver aren't going to bother you at all? You sure can fit a whole lot of mud and debris inside such a large hole ya know. |

I know that they never made a side folder. The M70B1 is the fixed stock version that I wanted to convert to a side folder. I also said that I probably would keep the orignal under folder mechanism, thus the holes would stay plugged up, duh. I was also thinking of having a steel insert machined to take the place of the mechanism, thus plugging the holes. I have already thought this part out, I just need to know if the rear trunion is strong enough to support a side folding stock. I'm not the moron you make me out to be. |

Anything is possible, but it's going to be fugly. Something like the add on adapter shown above would have to be fabbed IMO. The rear of the UF block is very thin. What I'd try to do is drill and tap two holes through the UF stock hole plug and use long grade 8 bolts with some kind of filler block between the plug and the rear of the UF mont block. I hope that sounds clear.

You're close. The trunion the underfolders is flat on the back side & fits flush with the back of the reciever. If it's strong enough, I should just be able to drill & tap it for the Ace mechanism. All's I'm worried about is the stregenth of it, I've thought everything else out. |
Plenty clear. The fact that it's thin has me worried. I was looking on Ace's site & they had a universal trunion that was flat on the back & didn't have any holes in it, so you could mark & drill your own to fit your rifle. It would have to be machined a little more to clear the UF mechanism or plug I mentioned earlier, but would make for a much neater appearance. Plus I'd have the rear swivel in a better place than it is on most side folders. Hmm, maybe i should email Krebs........... |
Uh huh. Well, there is a reason I got rid of all my yugo! Have fun with that sturdiness! Sure am glad those AMMS kits came in the country, now there's a decent 7.62 underfolder that's NOT yugo!

I'm starting to just think 'go for it.' I mean, if you drill and tap it, install the Ace and it cracks THEN you remove the trunnion and replace with something more solid, like the ACE. I don't really like the idea of modifying an underfolder receiver but I can understand your desire for a Yugo with a solid folder. I think a better idea would be to build a parts kit on a NDS receiver meant for a solid stock with the ACE trunnion. Honestly though, since you haven't bought the rifle yet, have you considered doing a milled rifle. Pick up an SLR-95 or a milled MAK-90 and add the ace stock, and enough other US parts, to that. It would still be super tough, but wouldn't look like Charlie Foxtrot built it. Even a stamped MAK-90 would be tougher than you'll ever need. Why hack up a evil underfolder when there are plenty of quality thumbhole AK's that need to be converted. Plus you can get a new MAK-90 for cheaper than the Yugo built out of a well worn parts kit and a new barrel. |
What sidefolder doesn't have the sling loop in the front, where it's not attached to a moving folding buttstock? None that I've seen/own. |
I don't want the rear swivel on the butt stock. Like I said, I like the idea of having the loops on the left side like it would be if I changed this to a side fold. |
