What mag is highly recommended for any ak47 platform?  I’m new to the AK side.  I think I read somewhere that the TAPCO are considered the P-MAG for the AK, is this correct?  If so is there a scare on these as well as all AR mags?  What a good (low cost) price for them and where?

Thanks,
D

I would stick to com bloc mags if I were you.

Look here for mags: Copes Distributing

Forgive my ignorance I should have gotten into the AK side years ago; Com Bloc (communist block) Mil issue?  Go with steel vs. polymer?  Will an AK mag fit any type of AK regardless of country of origin?  Do AK’s have a P-MAG of sort, or because of the slight differences, this is impossible?

Yes. Com bloc = communist block.

The Bulgarian Waffle mags are plastic (with steel lining), and I guess could be considered the P-mags of the AK world. They are excellent mags.

As for any ak mag working with any AK, the answer is no. Some AK's come in 5.56, some in 5.45, and some in 7.62 x 39. Therefore, you need mags suited for whatever caliber your ak uses.

Furthermore, WASR10's need to be modified to accept double stack AK mags.

Aside from the above, I believe all com block mags will work in any AK that is of the same caliber.

For example, you can use the plastic bulgarian waffle mags in a polish underfolder, just as you could use chinese AK mags. All would be compatable.

Not sure about the yugos though. I have no experience with Yogo AKs.

Thanks for the info.  I plan on sticking with the 7.62; I already have a SKS and a Ruger mini-30.  I have seen Yugo under folders at a local gun show before and am contemplating getting one.  I have never really like the WASR-10 anyway.  I really like the Arsenal ones but the $ is what is holding me back.

Don't count out the WASR despite the AK snobs say. I got one and like many here say its been 100% and a blast to shoot. If money is a factor just bite the bullit and get one. The other option is to get a Saiga and convert yourself. You will learn a lot about the rifle and its all new. The AK forum has all the details about how to convert. WJ

Before you buy Plastic or Polymer mags, take a look at the torture test video on www.k-var.com and decide for yourself.  The Arsenal waffle mags are the best.  All surplus steel mags are great.

I wouldn't buy a WASR 10... They aren't that much cheaper than a good AK... and if you are one of the unlucky ones, you will have problems with it.

I have been happy with steel magazines... solid.

Check out this thread for a good look at what a good plastic mag will take.

Not all WASRs are single stack.  They arrive in country that way and Century opens them up.

I am quite happy with my WASR.  It took 15 minutes to fix the crooked front sight post.  I also sanded and finished the wood.  Those two tasks weren't difficult and paying a premium for something else isn't worth it, IMO.
