I saw the distinct thumb hole stock of a MAK today at my LGS before taking her shooting. With a price tag of $450 I was getting ready to buy it on the spot. As soon as the employee handed it to me I noticed the evil pin. I told him about the situation and that he should double check, but I believe the BATFE considers them machine guns. He double checked and the rifle was pulled from the shelves when I followed up.
I'm thinking about following up with them on it and perhaps making a deal for a parts kit. I believe only the receiver is the illegal part in this case, or am I mistaken? Also wouldn't you think the BATFE would be a little more proactive on an "readily" convertible rifle? |

I wish I could come across one of those. Would make a great parts kit.
But I'd probably be afraid to buy it thinking it was some sort of ATF sting
In OPs case, I'd probably offer them slightly less than the asking price if they chop it up for me. $400 for a nice Chinese AK kit isn't bad at all. |

Also worth a felony! |
Sure, the ATF does not care that you have a receiver which meets thir definition of a machine gun
I agree with MYOB but some people are clueless and could find themselves in a predicament at some point.. Simply informing them of what they have is a polite gesture. |

Hell, after the Galil ACE fiasco I'm not so sure that the tech branch even knows what they are looking at lol But no matter how uninformed an agent may be, the law is the same. I'd hate to find my ass in a sling because I unknowingly bought something that is very illegal. I'd be grateful that someone tipped me off that it is something to look into. |
