I saw the distinct thumb hole stock of a MAK today at my LGS before taking her shooting. With a price tag of $450 I was getting ready to buy it on the spot. As soon as the employee handed it to me I noticed the evil pin. I told him about the situation and that he should double check, but I believe the BATFE considers them machine guns. He double checked and the rifle was pulled from the shelves when I followed up.

I'm thinking about following up with them on it and perhaps making a deal for a parts kit.

I believe only the receiver is the illegal part in this case, or am I mistaken?

Also wouldn't you think the BATFE would be a little more proactive on an "readily" convertible rifle?

Sounds like the Imfamous Clinton ak....the ones the atf tried to get back after thousands were sold.

Have see a few before over the years.

If they torch the receiver in half your GTG on it

Google seems to confirm the felony theory. Any idea if the parts would be kosher? (Besides the receiver) I'd like to have spare parts for my MAK!

Edit: Thanks FlyLeaf, I believe you're correct.

I saw a MAK90 at a local shop a few years ago the the extra hole and cut down selector stop.  I told the counter people, they did not believe me.  Hope they actually pulled it before some poor unknowing person bought it.

I wish I could come across one of those.  Would make a great parts kit.

But I'd probably be afraid to buy it thinking it was some sort of ATF sting

In OPs case, I'd probably offer them slightly less than the asking price if they chop it up for me.  $400 for a nice Chinese AK kit isn't bad at all.

This is BS. At our gun shows, the ATF has a table where they answer questions, & look for people doing straw purchases. From time to time, 3 pin AK's show up. The last one I saw was a Maadi, but most are Chinese. The ATF could care less, & never gave these guns a second look. They are looking for more important fish to hooK, like people buying 12 guns to send to Haiti. People need to mind their own business. Can you imagine walking into a gun store, & after seeing one of these guns , to tell the owner he "must" cut it into pieces. How RUDE can somebody be. Just say nothing, & leave. It's that simple.  GARY

Sure,  the ATF does not care that you have a receiver which meets thir definition of a machine gun

I agree with MYOB but some people are clueless and could find themselves in a predicament at some point.. Simply informing them of what they have is a polite gesture.

I would think at the very least they'd fall under the heading of contraband and be subject to forfeiture.

So...bye bye MAK money

I think he just means that your typical ATF field agent has absolutely no idea what they are even looking at.

Hell, after the Galil ACE fiasco I'm not so sure that the tech branch even knows what they are looking at lol

But no matter how uninformed an agent may be, the law is the same.  I'd hate to find my ass in a sling because I unknowingly bought something that is very illegal.  I'd be grateful that someone tipped me off that it is something to look into.

Here's an update, if anybody is interested, the GM decided not to sell me the parts off the rifle. I can assume they're either trying to get their money back from the seller or turning the whole rifle over to the Feds to be destroyed
