| Bought not to long ago does not seem to like shooting TulAmmo. Would an AK be more likley to shoot this ammo successfully? |
| Feeding problem. Is .308 and 7.62x39 the same? I thought .308 was 7.62x51? I have read everything from people who say they have ran 1000's of Tula rounds through their Mini 30, and others who say they can barley get through one clip without the bolt jamming open. Some have suggested the tolerance is too tight on the Ruger for the steel cased ammo, that I should try brass. |

FYI: All mini-30s since 1990 are .310, not .308 , call their customer support number, give them your serial number and they can tell you. Or slug your bore.
More likely its the magazine that is the issue. Factory or Triple-K or ProMag? It could also be that the lips on the mag got damaged some how. Is the bolt hanging up on something as you cycle the action? Double check the channel the op-rod rides in and see if it got dented some how. (been known to happen when taken apart and dropped on the floor) The Mini-14/30 can be either incredibly reliable or a jam-o-matic... |

It is really made for brass case, boxer primed American made ammo. Some people have had good result with Silver/Golden bear and Yugo brass ammo. I have a Mini 14 and broke a firing pin shooting Wolf berdan primed ammo. I have an AK to shoot 7.62x39. Seems to be a better platform. |
| I bought one years ago. Sold it and got an AK and never looked back. Factory 20 and 30-rd mags were like gold, and all the aftermarket mags were crap. Maybe things are different now but I've never owned another Ruger product. If you look in the owner's manual is says to not use any imported or surplus ammo, only USA-manufactured. But of course that would now include Hornady steel-case, wouldn't it? Another thing was Ruger wouldn't sell you a bolt - they had to install it. Just one thing after another with this platform. I highly recommend the rifle made for the ammo - the Kalashnikov. |

When I had one I worked for days on magazines trying to make them work, using every trick in the book, like tweaking feed lips, bending follower tails to get the nose up, reversing springs, dry lube inside, etc. I finally did get some mags that were more or less reliable, but that's when the light bulb finally lit. I sold it and got an AK in 1996 and never looked back. My rule: A gun has to be mil surplus or a clone of a military gun. That way, you know the magazines work, the ammo works, parts are available along with plenty of information. |
| I have had my mini 30 for about 12 years and only shoot steel case ammo from the rifle. Non Ruger magazines are junk and don't feed properly and jam. Also rare light primer strikes with the steel case ammo so I installed an after market hammer spring. Rifle.shoots approx 1.5" groups at 100 yards with Wolf black box HP ammo. Also every hog that has been shot with the rifle drops on the spot and does not get back up. |

Hate to say it......But I,m NOT a fan of Ruger ranch rifles.... Buy a (ANY) SKS and they shoot anything you put in them!Sorry don't mean to hi-jack the thread... I have two SKS's that are about to go on the market. It occurred to me when shooting one that for all practical purposes, they're physically as large as a Garand, yet fire a relatively low powered cartridge. So if I'm going own a rifle that fires a low powered cartridge, seems to me a carbine would be more in order. But that's just me. I'd check the magazine on the Mini-30. |

I have had three mini-30s over the years, along with two mini-14, and two SARs, one SAR1 and one SAR2. The mini's never worked well. They jammed, mags didn't work and were fragile, ammo expensive or in the mini-30 steal cased ammo is destructive to the rifle.
Over the years I sold them all. Today I have AK an AR pattern rifles. My advice, don't bother with the civilian designs. They just have not had the massive engineering and evolution that the military designs have. If I were to start over, tragic house fire or that rowboat accident I had last week, or could suggest what I would get after all I have learned over the last 25 years, and with only one gun it would be.... Wait for it... An Arsenal SGL31-61. http://www.atlanticfirearms.com/storeproduct890.aspx What you get for the price of a Mini-30 is; -Top of the line hammer forged, chrome lined Russian made barrel. Accurate and will last longer than you do. Unless you shoot it over 30,000 rounds you won't come close to wearing it out. Mini will last less than a third of that. -Still cheapest ammo anywhere with the milsurp 5.45x39 which is deadly destructive while low recoil, and at only .13 a round. Also, the Russian designs will eat ANY ammo it is built for unlike the Mini. -Magazines that while no longer cheap, are indestructible, never jam, and will also last longer than you do. Any Mini mag? If you can get a hi cap mini mag to work, don't drop in on the feeder lips or it will never work well again. -Russian rifles don't have the problem the Mini's do with the commi ammo primers, and they don't misfire hardly at all. This was my main complaint with the Mini designs. Any AR pattern is also excellent in every way and comparable. I tried, really tried to love the Mini's, (check out my user name) but now I feel like I wasted energy, time, and yes money on the Mini. I am sorry to slam your rifle, but I feel I wasted years on it and wish I could have just started with the Arsenal. Save yourself time, regret and money. Do get a nice Russian or AR rifle. You won't regret it. |
| i bought 2 new factory 20 round mags for mine, both of them are having trouble feeding the first round right out of the package. once you get past the first round it runs the whole mag. but on the first chambering its stopping a hair or two short. had to reseat the mag once and the other cycle the bolt. they were seated correctly both times, but i cannot tell whats going on. was golden bear ammo. ive shot norinco, winchester, and s&b though this gun. all the aftermarket mags sucked ass. some did have the same loading issue. the 5 round ruger mags never had a issue. ive never taken this gun apart though. However its had this behavior since day one in 92-93 when i got it. thinking of |
