Is there a way to add the spring loaded retainer to a front sight block that isn't equipped with one?

Yes. I have done it successfully on a Saiga.

I hope it's OK to post a link to another site.

If it has the hole in the front of the FSB all you need to do is knock out the forward pin, install the detent pin and spring and put the FSB pin back in, it's very simple unless you get a pin that's stuck.

If it has a stuck pin, you can just drill out the pin.

This is true but you'd want to use a milling machine preferably or at least a drill press. Drilling it by hand would be ill advised.

If you are careful, it can easily be done by hand. I have done it successfully by hand. It is not rocket science.

Sure it's easy but the pin is harder the the FSB casting so one could easily go off center thereby ruining the hole and possibly the channel in the barrel, BTDT. Some things require precision if you want to do it correctly and a hand drill isn't.

It's your rifle do it the way you want and if you've had success doing it that way good for you. My experience has been just the opposite, but I guess I'm just not as good.

My advice would be to use a precise tool if they had to drill out a pin.

I pull the front sight and use a mill - 5/32 or .158 cobalt drill.    Not cost effective, but on some guns like the Chinese one cannot simply buy a replacement FSB anymore so it's the only option.
