There is a trigger in it, but I have it painted out.

Had I known this thing would be this much fun, I would have done it a long time ago.

Update:
Being my first SBS, this one is somewhat of a testing platform and a learning experience for me. Anything that I haven't done before, I like to do on my personal weapons first.

During the first session, I fired 25 rounds of Federal Multi-Purpose bulk ammo. I had one FTE on the 2nd round of the Russian 5 round mag and had one FTE at about the 4th round of an MD-20 drum. I had a feeling that there would be a few failures. The weapon is a '09 IZ-109 and had no barrel hood extension. I added one of exactly the same dimensions of the barrel hood on the '11 models, but I left out the notch on the angle. Honestly, I just wanted to see if it was really necessary and how often there would be failures due to that minimum degree of barrel hood interference. Also, I did not install a skim in the receiver cover because I wanted to get the same info about that feature. In a nutshell, the notch in the barrel hood and the shim are both needed to achieve the insane reliability that I am becoming known for.

During the second session, after adding the shim and notching the hood extension, I had a lot of FTE with Winchester Universal in MD-20s, which I kind of expected. I had a few FTE with the Federal Multi as well. I was using a TAC47 Autoplug and was using it as a guage to find out how far I could go and it was releasing too much gas even when bottomed out to cycle the Winchester, but did well with the Federal after bottomed out. Winchester Universal, MD-20 drum, Autoplug, and an 8" S12 is really pushing it. I forgot to bring a factory plug on that trip.

During the third session (yesterday), the thing ran like a champ with everything, including the Universal. We fired some Winchester 3" 00 buck, which was strong, and some Remington Express 3" 00 buck, which made for some huge fireballs. It ran flawlessly with both. The triangle folder punished everyone except me. I have no bruising, but everyone else had bruising right away. The secret is to keep the stock tight to the chest, so it doesn't have a running start when fired. I was using a factory puck and gas regulator, but brought along a CSS puck, just in case the weapon continued to choke on the Universal. I didn't need it

My conclusion....
I am extremely happy with it and can't believe I waited this long to build an 8". Other than a few tweaks, I nailed it and have achieved the level of reliability that I wanted. IMO, it is an impressive piece and wasn't nearly as difficult to make it run than I imagined. Mission accomplished. I will post some video links as soon as I can figure out how to blurr the trigger out of the clips. If anyone has a suggestion on which editor is fairly user friendly and will edit .avi files, please let me know.

Specs:
'09 IZ-109
8" barrel (no threads, didn't want to add length with a muzzle device)
Gas system moved rearward 3.75"
4- .073" ports angled back slightly more than factory (block had very little debris in it after buck, Universal, and Federal Top Gun)
bobbed Saiga rifle handguard
MD Molot grip
modified AK Builder Trigger guard (riveted)
Russian 5.5mm triangle folder
modified factory gas regulator with 4 positions
factory puck
US (evl-made) 2 stage trigger w/overtravel limiter
scope rail shaved
all friction/resistance sources reprofiled and polished (closed bolt loading mod done as well)
all extra holes welded and blended to perfection
barrel hood extension added
barrel hood polished in and out

That's freakin cool!

I was just thinking about doing a S-12 as my next project, thanks for the inspiration!

The Saiga 12 is my favorite "fun" weapon. This one got more reaction at the range than I thought it would. It made some big fireballs too

Nice!  Did you have to mess with the gas ports?  Are you going to leave the front end as is?

I moved the gas system back 3 3/4" and drilled four new ports at 0.073". That is a chopped Saiga rifle handguard and the end of the barrel is behind where the original ports were.

Why did you paint out the trigger?

It is a 2 stage with a travel limiter, that I made, of course, you couldn't see any of that because it is inside. The bow is pretty wild looking and I may be submitting the design to Tapco. That is why I hid it

You did the work yourself?
Very cool!

Are you a gunsmith or just doing it for fun?

Sweet!

Great looking gun too, btw. I hope my rifle conversions go half as well.

At least with a rifle conversion you don't have to worry about doing much to make it run other than the bullet guide.
