Whats everybody think of these

I remember several years ago (when you could buy these for $250 new in the box) people on the Net talked about them as if some shot great and some were not accurate. Some had nicely machined metal and some had rough markings and fittings.  I believe all of them had the rivet in the mag release area that limited them to the proprietary magazines.

The one I had was more accurate than my FEG SA-85M (about 2-3 MOA) and had rough machining marks all over it. It looked like it had been assembled by Chinese prison labor. It would also not feed hollowpoints reliably.

The muzzle had a thread protector which was welded on. Some just had a screwed on protector but the release pin was jammed in place and could not be moved.

The buttstock on mine cracked when I dropped it so I replaced it with one made in China.

I liked it but I liked my MAK-91 much better.

The bipod leg height adjustment screws consistantly come loose. The bipod legs retract at "inconvenient" times.

I have owned a couple and still have one. The only really bad thing about them is the bipod screws. They need a very thin lock washer and shallow dimples drilled into the legs for the tip of the screws to fit into. Other wise the vibrations from firing will loosen the screws allowing one or both of the legs to retract.
To tell the truth the best thing you could do would be to swap the legs from this bipod with the ones on the NHM-91 bipod. The lever locks into the notches of the legs and is rock solid.

Forgot to add that the biggest plus is the longer heavy barrel. Being longer the sight radius is longer(distance between the front and rear sight). This reduces sighting error increasing accuracy. Also due to it having more mass than other AK rifle's barrels it can absorb more heat. This means that you can fire a few more rounds more rapidly before the heat exspands the metal affecting accuracy.

whats the difference between the NHM91 and the MAK91?

NHM-91 = stamped receiver,threaded for muzzle brake.
MAK-91 = milled receiver, National Match barrel that is .03" larger in diameter.

The NHM91 I found has no rivit were the mag catch is. I can use good old mags with it.

My NHM-91 didn't have the rivit under the mag-catch either.

Back in 1991 till the Chinese import ban in 1994 I saw several dozen NHM-91 rifles new in the box. I have seen rifles with the rivet, with the rivet loose, with the rivet not riveted just stuck in the hole, the rivet laying loose in the bottom of the box, and without the rivet. The early rifles came with a 5,10,and 30 round mags that had the tang on the mag milled out for the rivet. But most rifles ended up with 3-5 or 10 round mags and a lot of dealers sold the 30rd mag as a high priced acessoery item.

Mine most be older since it comes with the mags and a 75 round Chicom drum, and 2 cases of the first white box(TCW) Wolf ammo for a good deal.

This one came with no rivet and a 75 round drum mag, as well as a 5 (?) round magazine for $291 brand new.

It was one of three purchased back in 1992.  One of the other 2 couldn't hit paper at 100 yards, the other had 7+ MOA of barrel droop on the bipod at 100 yards when red hot.
The pictured one, the worst "looker" of the bunch, is a solid 2-2.5 MOA rifle at 100 yards from the bipod even scorching red hot with Norinco ammo bought at the same time.  It came in a different box, and originally had a different thumbhole stock on it from the other two. It looked to be from a diiferent lot, had a regular spring loaded muzzle nut, no modification required, and some light grind marks on the reciever.
