Hello,
This is my first post, and first AK-47 purchase.  I recently purchased a pre-ban US made ak-47.  The guy said since it was a pre-ban that I could add a folding stock (or other nifty things) too it.  My question is this, how would I go about doing this, and where would I find a folding (side-folding preferably) stock for it.  Also how much knowledge would be required.  I'm literally a complete newb to this.  Also thinking of changint out the entire stock in favor of something poly based. (love the black look)

Thanks, and be gentle lol.

K-Var and Global Trades come to mind, although you'll need to know "what/who" made the receiver as this is the part the stock will mate up with, to make certain you get the correct mounting.

Ok, on the receiver it's stamped B-West Tucson, AZ then below it AK47S 7.62x39.  Would that provide any clues to where it was made?  I apologise if this is a really dumb question, but I'm totally new to my new 'love'.  Though don't tell the wife. :-)

Welcome aboard libertarian..

If your B-west AK doesnt say "MADE INE THE USA" on the receiver, then it was made in China, and one of the good ones..

Unfourtuantley, B-West also made some receivers for themselves here in America, and they were not properly heat treated.

Uh oh, how bad would that be.  Mine does have Made in United States on it.  I knew I should have posted here before I made any purhases.  I just got all excited at the show when I seen it.  Should I just try and resell it, or should I just try to find another pre-ban reciever, one that's actually good, and just sell the bad US made B-West receiver?  Also what would you recomend for the receiver/new AK. (Pre-ban of course, want to be able to modify it and stay in the law)

have the receiver tested for hardness. a local machine shop may be able to do this for you or any place that has a rockwell hardness tester.

you are looking for a reading of no less than 24 on the rockwell "c" scale. any softer than that and it's time to sell the rifle 'as is'.

the hardness reading 'should' be in the 29-37 "c" scale range, in actuallity.

b-west built good ones and they built soft ones, as stated.

the cost to strip the rifle down to its' bare receiver, have denny heat treat it for you (he just did a batch of soft post-ban b-west receivers) and re-assemble the rifle is going to be cost-prohibitive, imo.

testing it for hardness should cost $20 or so.

Not to panic, just keep the oil to it.  Some light grease on the bolt where it rides in the receiver should help.  If it's not showing lots of wear, it might be OK. I had one of these rifles and the only wear of significance was the tip of the ejector got peened up. The rifle will not turn into junk overnight.  Just watch for the wear on the receiver where the bolt rides.

Thanks for the info. :-)  I'll go have it tested and see what the hardness is, and keep it good and oiled.  Hopefully it's one of the good ones lol.  I'll let ya'll know how it goes from there.  It doesn't look like it has any wear, but gonna take a better look this weekend when I break her down and give a good rub down.  Thanks again, I appreciate it alot.
