I've been doing some research on building my own AK, and I just wanted to get some things straight.

I basically need the following components:

receiver flat
receiver flat
complete parts kit
Parts kit
fcg

I then just need to either sign up to receive the community Jig, or build one.

It seems that most people prefer the rivet to the Udrives, I don't really see a difference either way.

But once the receiver is bent, I then have to remove the trunions from the parts kit, and assemble.

Is that pretty much the long/short of it? How come so many people are discussing removing the barrel pin? Is that just so that the front assembly doesn't get in the way while you remove the old rivets from the front trunion?

And during the installation, I can use rivets or a screw kit, is there any real benefit of one over the other?

One last thing, after the receiver is bent, I do have to heat treat it. Can I just use a standard torch and oil quench?

Thanks for any help

Read and Re read the BIY tutorials, tools and supplies section.  Should help in narrowing down your choices.

You decide if you want to do a rivet job or bolt/screw job it's purely preference.

I was originally bent on doing a bolt job but in the end did a rivet job (which does look nice).

You have to remove the barrel to get at the front four rivets, that is why the barrel must be removed.  The barrel pin is difficult in the Romanian kits but a large bolt can be used to push out the barrel.

After you have bent the receiver (typically) you will need to bend and cut the upper rails.  Then weld/rivet in the lower rail and drill the trunion holes.  All before heat treating it.  And yes torch and oil is the way to go, there are better instructions here on this part of the site.
