Hi folks, nice board!

Anyway, bought a Bulgarian SSR a few weeks back, went to the range had a blast, got it sighted in and I am Loving the AK!

My Question, when I was cleaning after shooting I oiled it similar to how I oil my SIG P226, which in a word is WET. Now I am having the trouble getting the Action to stay open with no magazine in the rifle, did I just over oil? Or is there a trick to getting the action to stay open that I don't know about?

When I pull back the charging handle it stays open briefly, but even the slightest movement or jarring will slam it closed, what am I doing wrong?

You're not doing anything wrong, it's not meant to stay open on an AK (unless you are using a Bolt Hold-Open magazine).

Thanks man!

I so glad it is something as simple as that.

some AK's will hold open, but it's only due to the bolt sitting on the trigger, and I wouldn't put your fingers anywhere near that action! There are some safety levers that have notches cut our that will hold the charging handle back. Krebs is the only one I know of off the the top of my head.

Yeah when it releases it snaps back pretty aggresively, I have already caught my finger on the safety once, OUCH!

Keep your hands and feet and women and children away from the open carrier!

Seriously, when you've shot the rifle some more the carrier won't hang open any more. The carrier and hammer just need to "get acquainted".

I love how you say you caught your finger in there once..........ONCE!  Something tells me you won't do that again.  My MAK-90 AK has done that before and still does that if I'm careful.  I've had it almost 15 years and I've been several thousand rounds through it and it will still do that from time to time, especially if it's not clean.  Just so you know, you don't have an AR-15 there so you don't have to lube it up real good.  Most solvents out there usually contain some kind of lubricant in the formula that will break down the powder residue and also leave some lubricant behind.  You can then apply some type of oil or lubricant if you prefer but you really don't need it.  That rifle doesn't give a shit if you lube it or ever even clean it, for that matter.  I would reccomend cleaning any gun after firing, though, just as a means to preserve it.  If most guns are maintained properly there's not reason they shouldn't last as long as you do, or longer.

That's also an interesting point about a safety being made by Krebs that's a bolt hold open.  Honestly, if there's no way to release the bolt by pushing some kind of button/lever (such as on an AR) I don't see the point in holding the bolt open, other than to tell you the gun is empty.  Most of the time, the shooter isn't aware the bolt is held open until they pull the trigger because you can't see it if you're looking down the sights.  It also doesn't save you any time considering you still have to pull the slide/bolt handle back in order to release.  I'm sure many posters here are familiar with a Walther PPK and how it has that feature.  If the gun doesn't have a thumb-release then why have the hold-open feature?  Sorry if I got off track here.

p.s. I have a P226 as well.  Great gun but I haven't been able to hit shit with it since installing Trijicon sights on it.  Every other pistol I have I hit everything I aim at.

The outdoor range I shoot at wants them open when everyone is downrange putting up targets.  I will just put it back in the case during those breaks..., Good to know about the Oil, I figured it was overkill but I am have always oiled up the SIG and I was enjoying my first breakdown and clean for the AK so I got a little carried away.

I love my SIG, I am extremely accurate with it but I am also using the standard white dots.
