| Just bought a Romy AK-74 with a sporty stock. The early type with the up-turned cocking handle. Went to pick it up today and noticed it was a single stacker with no dimples. The rifle is new and I didn't pay too much for it. The action is one of the smoothest I've felt on an AK and the quality is excellent. The question is can a hardened receiver be dimpled and would it be worth it? Or, should I just sell it and continue looking for an Intrak II? Thanks in advance. |

Quoted: Well, it CAN be dimpled (Ted Marshall has done it on Saiga's), but it's expensive. this, not worth it IMO. There are plenty of Saigas and Romanian rifles out there with out the dimples that function great. Find a tutorial on how to open that magwell up and get-r dun! |

The Romanians never made a single stack 74. I'm pretty sure they did. Otherwise, why would this magazine exist? |

While I perfer the the dimples for the same reason I perfer x and y stamps and ribbed topcovers "for the look" they do not make the rifle not function if they are not there. From what I have learned from owning rifles with and without dimples is they are there as a mag guide, if you look into the mag opening just under the bolt carrier are rails that hold the mag at the outside edge of the feed lips and the actual mag opening holds the lower portion of the inserted mag thus securing the mag from side to side movement the dimples are in between these two so when you rock the mag into place if you are pulling/pushing it left or right the dimples will guide it straight in and between the rails rather then hit the bottom of them.
I have a Bulgarian ssr-85cs with dimples but the rails have been ground down to a point where it has more side to side mag slop then any non dimpled Ak I have owned and the mag opening is the exact same as my Chinese ak's with perfect fitting mags. Someone else could have put it into words far better then I did but I gave it a shot hope this makes sense and helps with your decision.

It cannot be dimpled, but the mag well can be opened up to take regular magazines. Well, it CAN be dimpled (Ted Marshall has done it on Saiga's), but it's expensive. And he won't ever do it again for any amount of money- I've asked. Basically the steel doesn't stretch exactly, it bends and distorts. |

The Romanians never made a single stack 74. WASR 2... 5.45x39 Imported as single stack rifle, redone here to accept standard 30rd mags..just like the WASR 10. So it would appear the Romanians did

I have a Saiga conversionin 7.62 I bought in 2000 before they even were offered with dimples. I have put 10 rds thru it without a hickup. I recently bought one with dimples and have converted it myself. It does not affect anythin Well there you go guys, in case you were wondering, dimples aren't necessary. The 10 round torture test proves it
