Ok, stand back.......Is there any way to headspace an AK without the traditional gauges?hock.gif

and, how do you adjust the headspace if it is out of spec?hinking.gif

There is the "tape trick" for headspacing.  I don't recommend it.  Beg, buy or borrow a set of gauges.

For adjusting headspace you will need to remove the barrel pin, set headspace and redrill barrel pin hole oversized and use a new barrel pin.

Depends on what size you redrill the barrel pin hole.  You can drill the hole and then cut the shank of the drill off and use that for your new barrel pin.

If you use the shank of the drill that you used to drill the hole with in the first place, the shank will just fall out. The new barrel pin should be .001 to .002 smaller than the drilled hole to work properly! Drill bits are great barrel pins after they are too dull to resharpen again!

I plan on picking up a set of gauges but what is the "tape trick"?

A guy posted this a awhile back;
Head Spacing
1) Take one piece of masking tape, put it over the primer, the bolt should close on this completely, this is your go gauge.
2) Take one more piece of tape and put it over the top of the first to make two layers of tape (make sure the tape doesn't cover any part of the cartridge that goes into the barrel) the bolt should not close completely on it, this is your no go gauge.
3)  Take one more piece for a total of three layers and try it again. The bolt shouldn’t even rotate into the lugs at this point. I tried this method last night with a new build and it works great.

If the shank of the drill you used will just fall out then wouldn't a pin that is a couple thousandths smaller yet be even more apt to fall out?

You shouldn't need to add tape for a nogo gauge. Just use a small variety of rounds to make sure it goes fully into battery.

Is there a source for AK47/AKM go/no-go guages that can be used when building one from a kit? I havnt seen any specific ones out there but maybe I'm missing them. If the tape method is unreliable, do all the kit builders just try a variety of typs of ammo prior to riveting the front trunion down?

-other than the 28 dollar guage from Brownells

This makes sense.  My .308 go-nogo gauges are .004 different.  (1.6300 vs. 1.6340).

Thanks for the info.  Now, off to the Wilmington show tomorrow to pick up a few kits........height=8
