I want to get in long range shooting. I do have a 700p that I have yet to put a glass on and pull the trigger. Also I would like to get some trigger time in before dumping massive amount of money for a scope for it. I also got a PSL 54 around the same time that has the 4x6 scope on it. What is the max range you can hit a human size target? I would like to at least get out to 300-600 yards. Would it be a waste of time to learn how to shoot on the PSL since I have it ready to go?

P.S. Yes I myself think it is weird that I have two rifles in my safe that I have yet to shoot.

Depends on how well your rifle shoots, and the ammo you use, but 300 - 600 should be very doable.

Not weird to have guns in your safe that haven't been shot, I've got an SGL21 that's been sitting in there for a few years, not a single round. I agree with maxx, PSL's can be a real hit and miss when it comes to accuracy so I would suggest to take it out and shoot the rifle to see which category it falls into. The 700, I'm assuming .308, has much more greater potential for accuracy given the vast amount of ammunition you can feed through it as well as the ability to have the gun itself tweaked to reach it's full potential. If you have a scope laying around with no rifle fitted to it, throw it on the Remington and see how it shoots, then start saving up for better glass. That's gonna cost you anywhere from $400 on up. To me, shooting inaccurate rifles is just plain frustrating.

Everyone's eyes are different and different glass is different.  Russian 4x scopes look a lot clearer than the Romanian 4x scopes to me; mostly the markings on the reticles appear smaller and sharper.  I am certain I will be able to shoot at least a little better with my Russian 4x than my Romanian 4x.   I'm also sure many people with better eyes than me can find man sized targets at 300 and more with 4x scopes, but I can't.  We have full sized silhouettes at the range where I like to shoot ... I find them well at 300 with 6x and 8x, but struggle to find them with my Romanian 4x.  I do well with my Romanian scope at 200 and closer.  I have an SKS that I love to shoot with iron that serves me well at 100 & 200 ... makes everyone who shoots it smile.

There was an 8x on GB today with Buy Now that went for $125 ... there's a Russian 4x on eBay running below the average Romanian price at $100 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/290733089845). I don't think anyone would be hurt to buy the Russian 4x for $150.  Both good deals, but if your gun isn't a sweet shooter, glass isn't going to help it.  MOA is MOA ... take it out and see what it can do.  If it runs under 2 MOA, its probably worthy of more glass.  If you are an eagle eye ... 4x will already be enough to 600.  Russians claimed they could hit man sized targets with SVD's and 4x at 600 and 800 with guns that ran 1.5 MOA  ... before anyone cracks on the PSL not frequently shooting the same ... PSL's almost always have IOR scopes, not real PSO's.

I would say out to about 500 yds on a human sized target you should be good, but much farther than that would be pushing the limits of the PSL.  I don't think that it would be a waste of time at all. You will be able to afford to shoot the PSL a lot more often than the 700, and you can practice the basic principles of long range shooting without worrying about the cost of ammo. Just don't expect the same accuracy between the two.
