I have 2 Romanian PSL rifles and 1 POSP 4x scope.  I've tried the scope on both rifles.

The problem seems to be one of a wandering zero, and it happens with both rifles.  The rifles will not hold zero, throwing shots all over a 2-foot pattern at 100 yards.  When I remove the scope and shoot with the iron sights, I get nice 3MOA groups.  I'm using Uly 148-grain ammo.

I'm familiar with adjusting the tightness of the mount via turning the castle nut.  However, I have no desire to have it so tight I need a rubber mallet to remove the optic.  A friend's PSL with POSP shoots 1.5MOA with the same ammo and his scope removes and reinstalls easily with no mallets or banging/struggling required.
Am I basically left with no choice but to try mounting the scope "farmer-tight" or is there perhaps an issue with my reticle or some other internals in the scope being loose or out of spec and shaking around under recoil?

Here's what I would check:
1.  Make absolutely sure when you slide on the scope and tighten the lever, the scope remains flush up against the stop at the front end of the rail.  If not, no matter how much you tighten the lever, the scope will move forward due to recoil.

2.  If your friend is agreeable, you can use his good setup to determine if you have a scope problem or a mount problem.  Use your scope on his rifle and if the zero wanders, you know the scope is the culprit.  Use his scope on your rifle and if the zero wanders you have a mounting problem.

3.  The worst case scenario is your scope shoots good on his rifle and his scope shoots good on your rifle.  THAT would be frustrating!

4.  Bear in mind, 3 moa is not to be sneered at and is within the tolerances for the rifle/scope (4 moa is the max deviation).  The fact that your friend's PSL shoots better may be due to other issues...some PSLs just plain shoot better than others.  Perhap's your friend has better technique?
On my PSL, I use a screw driver to pry up the lever from the locked position.
HTH and good luck!

Lock it down hard. Finger tight ain't gonna do it. Also shim it with a thin piece of brass if there is a gap.
