Is a 47 piston the same as a 74 one. Can I use a 47 piston in a 74 build?

74 is shorter.

and the threads are longer. Before one could get AK-75 pistons, I shortened AK-47 pistons, but it is sub-optimal.

Yep.

If memory serves, the Tapco US made version is a "either or"

They accomplish this by having you lock-tite a collar on the piston for AK 47 use, it spaces the piston out from the bolt carrier noze long enough to meet spec.

You use it without the collar for an ak 74
