Looking at getting a VZ58 or a variant. Love the design.

However, I have a need for an optic, so a rail is going to be a requirement.

Prefer a fixed stock, don't like folders.

I know a lot about all sorts of guns but virtually nothing about the VZ58 design until recently.

There isn't really a variant of the VZ58. It's either a VZ58 or not. The VZ2008 is just the new manufacture semi auto ones.

For optic mounts you have 3 options, side rail, dust cover or gas tube.

VZs have both flavors of stock.

I started with a parts kit and used an AWO receiver.

I have one from Czech Small Arms (CSA) and it comes tapped for a side-mount.  I bought the rifle from Atlantic Firearms but I believe theirs are currently out of stock - here's their write up:
https://atlanticfirearms.com/czech-small-arms-vz-58-military

The side-mount bracket (and the rifle for a slightly higher price) is available directly from CSA:

I got a Bonesteel upper handguard rail replacement to mount an optic over the gas tube:
https://www.bonesteelarms.com/product/vz-58-srs-hand-guard-set/
I decided I liked the iron sights better so am using the rail for an offset weapon light.

The VZ isn't cheap but IMO is totally worth it.  Outstanding quality all around.
