Got two Legends: Underfolder and a NM. Wish I also had a std. I do have an early Clayco std. One of the first to hit the Tulsa area. Preserving the grip on my folder with a more durable one. Still have the cone FH for the NM.

Nice!  But spend the money and get a new wood pistol grip to get rid of that ugly plastic one on the underfolder.  And get a muzzle nuts for the underfolder and Clayco - the original badass look is tainted with those AK74-style muzzle brakes on them.

I still have the original grip and want to keep it nice, as well as the slant brakes, etc....the 74 brakes work well and can easily be changed. Damn, and to think I thought of black Teeing these so they wouldn't rust! China blueing isn't exactly done like the older Colts. When you think you may have to bury them someday, the thought crosses your mind. I can always retro.

I made out pretty good on a trade a few years ago., I had a NIB SIG 226 with 4 mags + $150 that I traded for a Polytech . Its the fixed stock underfolding spike bayo. The rec. has some small scratches and the wood may have a few little dings (not bad) but it has never been fired.
I have a couple SAR 1s' that I shoot the heck out of.....I figure I would just let the Poly stay unfired.
Just got a great deal on a Norinco 84s fixed stock version...but I would love to get a Polytech Legend Underfolder one day!!!

Damm I just may have to start selling a few more ARs to fund it

If I get motivated later I will have to post a few pics of the Poly.

Turns out we found the box in mint condition and all the rest of the accessories. It even had the original purchase receipt.

$459 out the door way back when. I can't remember the date on the receipt.

That rifle is worth about$1200-$1300.  I bought 5 extra of the folding spike bayos from Kengs when they were selling them for $19 a piece.  I own three of the those underfolders and they are the shit!

US Autoweapons in Scottsdale, AZ has one in stock, but I didn't see the price tag.

Yea I'm in New York. Only reason I was asking is I picked one up preban 1984 poly tech NM for $1350 on gunbroker. New in box. Wanted to see if that was an excellent deal and what the average going rate is for them. I heard there were only about 20,000 made and very few were imported into the U.S.

Lots of the National Match rifles were imported.  Certainly less than the standard rifles, though.  The price you paid is probably about average, if it has all the accessories within the box.  They don't seem to be of as much interest to folks compared to the standard rifles, so more Polytech rifle collector folks buy them usually.

Is the longer barrel the reason people lose interest in it?

I think it was due to the RPK and RPK-74 kits that came into the US many years ago.  At one time, the Egyptian Maadi RML and RPM (long-barreled Maadi versions) and the Polytech Legend National Match were basically the only two "RPK-ish" rifles you could make as an RPK clone.  They were kind of close but that's as close as you could get to one back then.  And many folks liked the appeal of the long-barreled AK for various reasons.  There weren't a whole lot of AK rifle options back then, anyway.  But it seemed like interest waned a little when the RPK kits, and later the RPK-74 kits, came in.  And then, when receivers for the kits became available, there weren't a lot of people interested in the quasi-RPK clone as much.  The Polytech Legend National Match was sort of put on the back burner in lieu of all the new and interesting AK things that started coming down the pipe.  Especially when aesthetics/accurate appearances of the available semi-auto AK's became more popular and the ability to now make an AK to almost 90% perfect representation in appearance to its true-life cousin.  The Polytech Legend National Match wasn't a representation of any actual Chinese military variant - just a marketing item.

Collectors now enjoy them due to it being a rifle product in the Polytech line of imported AK's as well as its allure for being a "pre-ban" rifle and no longer imported/importable.  There's some mystique around pre-ban rifles as well as some interest with those in certain states that can only have them, should they want an AK in a military-style form.  The Polytech Legend National Match now seems to be in its own little bracket of collectibility for those into such aspects of the rifle.  Not a huge purchasing demographic for it because of the price (due to being pre-ban and no longer imported).  Many Chinese Kalashnikov collectors like them to round-out their collections but not many folks are buying the rifles to simply shoot because of the RPK options out there.  Fortunately, or unfortunately, the Polytech Legend National Match rifle has become more of a Wall Street-type stock or investment, rather than a shooting rifle.

But that is totally my take on them, from being a longtime collector and observer.  I've got a lot of Polytech rifles and never got around to getting one of the Polytech Legend National Match rifles.  But I ignored them when they used to be obtainable for $800 several years ago.  Now, that train has probably left me at the station unless I find one fairly cheap.  But since I honestly wouldn't probably shoot it (whether new-in-box or not) if I had one and because I have a few RPK/RPK-74 variants I shoot, I likely won't ever get one of the rifles anyway.

(apologies for the long write-up)

Thanks so much, I appreciate the write-up.  Very informative.  I have been an AR guy my whole life so I am trying to learn as much as possible about AKs.  Going by what you have to say, since I already purchased the rifle, I suppose what I will do is keep the national match and then maybe add a more accurate representation of the AK down the line (possibly a standard poly tech legend).  What about accuracy though? I have heard stories of these national match setups producing sub MOA groups usually comparable to that of a quality AR.  What is your understanding of these claims?
