I have tried it, and wasted 3 flats trying different methods. That works out to about half of what a bending jig will cost. If you try it I truly hope you have more success than I did. I bought a jig from jlb428 over in the EE forum for $125 shipped, have tried bending 2 flats and now have 2 functioning receivers. Takes about 15 minutes apiece to bend the flat and the upper rails.

yes i know..i have contacted him regarding the jig but the problem is that i just want to bend 1 receiver and maybe have 1 more just in case...since i live in Europe the cost to have the jig sent will be around 200 usd plus the custom, tax etc....probably it willl land around 300 usd  for having 2 flats bent...
i have  also considered to buy 2  laser cut receivers but  i have allready been scammed buy one nice fellow " yes i will tell  the name  further on,,," ...or the shop dont  send outside the US....
so if anybody have 1 or 2 laser cut left who want to sell to me ill be more then happy...

Never tried it, but it seems reasonable if you cut deep (but not too deep) and bend the top rails first.  Spend a lot of time measuring to make sure your top rails will line up after you do the bottom bends.

Over on gunco.net there is a discussion on how to make a jig from a trip to a hardware store.

I would not recommend using the Dremel tool method of bending a flat.
I tried it and it didn't work.  If this is the only way you can do it, be very
meticulous (sp) in laying out your lines.  After it is bent you will have to
find someone who is a very good welder to fill in the scribed lines.  Use only
a TIG welder not a MIG welder, my buddy who is a very good welder only has
a MIG and he was unable to set the heat low enough to keep from burning
through the flat. From what I have learned a TIG is better for fine work.
Good luck.

I started a thread over on www.dirtydozensbunker.com about it.

at the moment the best option seems to be the "very poor" mans flat bending jig  illustrated at the Gunco forum,
But i must ask...IF i found a nice chap willing to bent the flat receiver but ONLY the lower bending
not the upper ones, it cannot count as a 100% or?
im willing to pay 1  flat for each bent  for me...
of course ill pay the shipment cost as well

As soon as the first bend is made it is a receiver.

Really? I could swear I've seen prebents sold without ffl required... ? Can't remember where but I don't think they had dimples.

Prebent, but the holes aren't finished.

Here's what I have sitting in my garage waiting to be worked on:

If you have a welder (or know somebody who has one), this would be good, StillinThe80s.  Bend by hand along the seams and then weld the corners.

Are there any legal restrictions about sending unfinished receivers to IT?  If not, I'm sure somebody here could help you out.  With global priority mail, you could probably get 2 of them for $100 or so.

Hi Bnorman no no restrictions  at all. but the companies who sell them  dont accept International credit card or Paypal..
just money order or check and they cost a lot  + long waiting time...

Still, why not just make your own bending jig?

Not shown in my pics is the flat form (or shoe) made from 2 sections of 2"x3" box tube, 4 bolts and 20 nuts  to hold the two pieces of box tube at the proper distance apart. Nuts inside and out (as jam nuts) of the tubing. 5 nuts per position, top, bottom, rt, lt.

Here are 2 threads dealing with the Poor mans flat jigs. FWIW, I have about $10 in scrap steel involved in mine.

I took two 1.25 x1.25 peices of iron cut them to about 11 inches in legth.  Drilled holes in the front, back, two in the mag well, one through the trigger cutout and one through the grip hole.  Then cutout for the two side dimples and the magazine lip.  Used a modfied poor mans gig with bolts running through each hole.

I modified the top of the front of the jig, because i pre bend the upper rails, using 1.5 inch angle iron with a cut out for the dipples.  That way when it is bent in the jig, it will not effect the upper rails.  Measure to the center of the flat then .625 on either side, mark it with a razor blade and measure 1.18 on the front and 1.65 on the back, mark it again with the razor blade and lay the angle iron between the marks.  Sandwich the flat between the angle iron and a peice of flat stock with some c clamps and put it in a vice to bend the upper rails, with a hammer.

Then take the flat and put it in between the two peices of 1.25 steel and tighten down the bolts real tight.  I started the bends with a peice of wood as explained on the poor mans jig then finished it up in the vice.

Cost me $7 bucks for a 3 foot peice of 1.25 x 1.25 steel and another $4 for bolts and lock washers.  I took pictures but do not know how to upload them.

I do not take credit for this, I read the poor mans jig post and just modified it, I had a hard time bending the upper rails once the flat was bent.  Be sure to check and double check that the flat is centered.

Cold Steel Solutions, Inc.

Here's what you want... 80%, already bent, with dimples.  You need to get a template and drill the holes, etc.

Another 80% already bent with template PRE-attached!
