I purchased two ProMag AK 47 polymer 30rd mags from Tapco today. I decided I would give them a complete run through, since no one else had posted any experience with them. The first thing I noticed is the lips are NOT reinforced with steel. They are just polymer. I loaded the magazines and inserted them into the mag well. They slid in with ease, but they wobble worse than any other mag I have ever seen. I compared them to several other mags, Rom. steel, Bulg. steel, Bulg. pol., Norinco steel, and Russian steel. None of them had near the same amount of wobble. Next was feeding. I cycled the mag by hand and every single round had to be forced out of the mag into the chamber. I don't know how these mags would fair at the range, and will never know. They are going back to Tapco tomorrow. The rifle is a new Vepr K 7.62x39.

I took the mags back today, and just wanted to say that even though the product was inferior, Tapco has one of the best customer service departments I have ever seen.

+1  They are very good about that.  It's one of the many reasons I don't hesitate to buy from them.

I was wondering about them too.  Thank you for the test, and the heads up.

so you didnt even shoot the gun with the mag?

I did not test fire the magazines. I thought the reason was obvious. The magazines failed my evaluation before they even made it to the range. But hey, there is nothing stopping you from testing them at the range. For me it would have been a waste of time, THEY ALREADY FAILED.

maybe I didnt understand what you said?

You cycled them with the BC or your own hand?

If you want to know the truth, I trained a small group of Siberian hamsters to cycle the weapon.

Did you somehow think I meant Icycled the mag OUTSIDE of the rifle, just hoping and praying the rounds would find their way into the chamber? The mag was INSERTED into the rifle. I cycled the action by hand. It took alot of pressure to strip the rounds from the magazine (which was in the rifle). Did I mention the magazine was IN the rifle?

Hand-cucling the weapon is a lot different than actually shooting it.

I have never seen a decent ProMag magazine.

Well they are all the same its not like they made ones with metal inserts or anything thats the main draw back really.  But it doesnt like to feed in my wasr or fit for that matter for some reason.

the springs in promags are about 2 in. shorter than surplus. also if you look at mag from rear you will see that the bolt slot is narrower and shallower, which puts extra pressure on bolt. i dont understand why promag didnt copy surplus mags.

I finally fot to test the ProMag magazine in an AK and it worked flawlessly.  The polymer is glass reinforced and does not need the steel inserts which would make it costlier to manufacture.  The glsss fibers provide the stiffness needed.  I don't know what magazines the VEPR uses but the Saiga will NOT function properly with AK magazines unless converted and have a feed ramp added to them.  This is what I suspect is happening with the VEPR which also uses proprietary magazines.

All my ProMag magazines have been excellent.  I used them on my pistols and they are as good as the factory mags.  My polymer Mini-14 is the only decent aftermarket magazine I ever used, it inserts into the mag well the same as the factory magazine and fall freely as the factory magazine.  I had other Mini-14 aftermarket magazines which crapped out after a while.

My Vepr came with a promag.....I guess thats what RobArm is putting in all the boxes.

Anywho, no problems as of yet. Granted my Bulg. Steelies have a lot less play but function-wise, they all work fine.

You sound like  you work for ProMag or something? Every ProMag I have ever had sucks! They just don't make quality mags.

At the show this weekend there was a fellow selling clear promag waffles they were like a blue smoke color and not reinforced with anything.
They looked cool but but life of the mag ????
Does anyone remember the 10/22 mags that were all plastic including the lips the lips would crack and fail so they started making the bodies plastic with metal around the lip area.
You would think they would have learned from the other mag companies.

and besides, the promag is a good $20, you can get steel ones for less than that. why mess with success?

For all you guys having such great luck with Promag, congrats. As for me I'll stick with my Bulgarian polymer mags. To me the more expensive Promags aren't even close.

3 US parts for compliance: mag body, follower, floorplate.

Which "those" are you refering to, the Promag or the Bulgarian? Here's the Bulgarian 7.62 LINK, as for the Promag, try looking in the dumpster outside of the Knob Creek shooting range.

I have used all kinds of mags, and with the exception of US made crap, they all work fine. That being said, I like the Bulgarian polymers best. Good luck.

Funny....everyone posting negative comments on the mag are for the MOST part, persons who have not even TRIED the promag. Not to say that everything promag makes is the best.
It's just that those who have actually used the mag have no issues. You can find the mags for much less then others on the market and they DO work without problems. Another thing is that many people have part kit AK's and some are not set up to spec like factory guns. Even the "best mags" can still have issues with those guns. I just hate to see the internet rumor mill go around spreading untrue statements about good products.
