Are there any 5.45 mags out there that hold less than 30 rounds? 20 maybe? I'm thinking along the lines of the 20 round 7.62 mags, but i have a feeling its wishful thinking.

IIRC the Romanian 5.45 rifles came in with 5rnd mags but they seem to have disappeared.  I've never seen one for sale anywhere.

I've considered hacking a cheap black Bulgy "circle 10" or EG bakelite down to size, using high strength epoxy to glue the base plate "ears" back on.  Or maybe using button head screws & a plastic or aluminum plug to make a new base (as seen on some Israeli surplus M16 mags that had broken floorplate tabs).

I have four 10 round 5.45 mags that I use in my SAR-2 when shooting from a bench.  I haven't seen any 20's but I would like to have some.  My favorite 7.62x39 mag is the Hugarian 20.

Where'd you get the 10rnd mags?  If I could find a couple of 10rnd mags I'll forget about hacking a 30 into a 20.

I just looked all over gunbroker and auction arms and didnt see any.

10 rounds isnt much, but its better than nothing. I'm getting a drop case for a aks-74 i'm going to build, and i'd like to have something in the mag well.

Edit: I dont suppose .223 mags would work..?

Beryl of poland makes 20 rd .223 AK mags.  maybe those can be made to fire 5.45.  a company in Iowa imports them, don't know if then sell to the public.

This thread is blasphemy, the higher the mag count, the better.  Just kidding, I'd be interested in some 20's too.

I read somewhere that .223 mags should work with 5.45, more than a few people said they had .223 mags work 100%. Prices are pretty dang high though, i found one 20rd and its $35.

Who would have thought it would be hard to find a low cap mag. Maybe the gun show this weekend will have something.

One came with my SAR-2.  For the others, I went to the Equiment Exchange and posted a WTB thread and a couple of folks responded.

The ten rounders come in handy on a bench rest.

I have a 5.45 and 7.62 10 rounder.  I am willing to trade.  I would like a Russian 5.45 bakelite (willing to throw in something else if needed)  Just IM me

I IM'd you, but if you're willing to sell it let me know. Dont have any 5.45 mags at the moment.

I have the metal 10rd mag that came with my SAR-2; I understand these were made by cutting down 30rd Romanian mags. I have never seen any offered for sale separately.  I also have 4x 20rd bakelites made for me by a forum member (either here or on ak-47.net back before it went gooney). I believe there's a picture in the Tokoi (sp?) book of an AKS-74U with a factory 20rd bakelite mag; my chop-jobs look very similar. They're nice for bench shooting, and as a curiosity. I'll try to get a pic up this evening.

I would be very interested in a 10 or 20rd. mag for my AK-74. If anyone has one e-mail me. I just picked up a POSP for my Ak-74 and need one for bench shooting.

Those cut down 20 round mags sound interesting, i may try to make a couple of those at some point.

I found a 10 round mag though i think, so i dont need one anymore BTW. Someone else can bug huey_crew_chief.

Heh, i've got a parts kit, drop case, and mag on the way, and a case of 5.45 in the works. I'm a month away or more from having the gun. hug.gif

As for k-var, i looked before and just double checked, they're all 7.62 or .223 (which may work actually).

How'd you do the bottom (for the floorplate)?

Andreuha:
I didn't do the 20rd mag at all; it was done for me.  The fella who did it said he just cut the bottom 1/3 off of a 30rd mag, then cut that piece off about 1/2" up from the floorplate. Shortened the spring a bit, reattached the bottom stub with JB-Weld, then painted over the seam to help disguise it. I've had these 4 20rd mags for a few years now, and none of them have come apart or been anything but 100% reliable.
