Thanks to all. To tell you the truth, I thought I was gonna get a new one reamed in me over the color but I wanted this to look like a different animal, not just a short ak.

That is strange but good lol. I like it! How do you like the Iron dot? I really wish I could have gotten one...apparently Burris changed them and Larue is having to redesign the mount. Which may never happen. I tried the irondot on my tantal, and didn't like it. A 4moa dot is just too big on something as precise as 5.45 imo. I think I'm gonna love it on this pistol though. I removed the extra cover Larue puts on there, and now there's virtually nothing in your field of view. Both eyes open shots should be cake now. If I can do about 4" at 50 yards, I'll consider this build a success. Quoted:
Looks great IMO. Your work area is to clean though. Those pics are strategically positioned

wow thats neat. but how does the selector "catch" the carrier? I don't see how it saves any time. I'm not that good a describing things, but I'll try. With a normal BHO mag, the follower catches the bolt (and as a result the carrier of course) when the last round is shot. But in order to change mags, you have to fight the recoil spring to pull the mag, and the action slams home forcing you the rack the carrier after you put the next mag in. What I've done is cut a notch in the selector that catches the charging handle at nearly the exact point where the mag catches the bolt. Nearly, but not quite, it actually forces the carrier back about 1/16" of an inch or so which releases the pressure on the mag, lets you change mags with the action back, then you whack the selector down, and you're good to go. Not to mention it's a more convenient way of holding the action open for ranges and such. (As long as you shoot the whole mag anyways Hopefully that made sense, I'm much better at doing things than explaining how to do them Maybe Rube will clarify this for me if not Quoted:
I like the look of the crown being inline with the front sight/ gas block combo. I always thought that kind of setup was neat, but it's a royal bitch if you ever have to recrown. You're right, it would be more work, I'd have to take a little off the back of the front gas block, push the whole thing back a little, and redrill oversize pins, maybe even shave a bit off the front of the gas piston, but I could do it all in about an hour (except the crowning, that IS a bitch to do on a mill let me tell ya )
Thanks again for everyone's kind words. I had a lot of fun building it, now it's time to see what I can do with it at the range! |
