Degreasers work on cosmoline and if you are careful you should be able to use something like a break or carb cleaner with great results (problem is it will strip the laminate finish off the wood).  It has been a while since I handled an SKS but if you remove all the wood you can it should not be a problem.

I did mine in the dishwasher.  There's no easier way to get all that crap outta the nooks and cranies.  You are left with a stripped stock, so I refinished with 5-6 coats of tung oil.

EWWWWW, you put that nasty thing in the machine that washes your dishes?

If you want to strip your stock, get FUME-FREE oven cleaner and spray it down to include the "nooks and crannys."  Rinse.  Spray down again and //carefully// use an old toothbrush (or similar) and scrub the hard-to-reach areas.  Oven cleaner is caustic, it will burn your fingers and eyes if it comes in contact.  Use your PPE.

After a couple of rinsings, let COMPLETELY dry.  Do not panic.  You WILL think you have ruined your stock.  It will be bleached out and look like a toothpick.  Hang in there!

You can use 0000 Steel Wool to smooth out the stock.  Remove wool residue with lint-free cloth and apply Boiled Linseed Oil (BLO) or Tung Oil //your choice//.  Hand-rub several coats into the stock until it cannot absorb any more.  //it will bleed when it cannot absorb more//

Rub with soft rag until you're satisfied.

Done.

I have done this MANY times and have ALWAYS been satisfied with my results.

I think you also posted this question some where else?

But I replied to that one too, I use mineral spirits.
