Hey all,
I have a Romanian ROMAK 1. 7.62x39. I bought me a good 3-9x40 scope at a gun show and ordered a scope mount from cheaper than dirt and I put it all together and it looked great. But I could not for the life of me get it to sight in. I started out at 100 yards and that did`t work so I came in to 50 yards and that would not work either. I have a laser bore sighter so I put that on it and the cross hairs would line up with the laser perfectly but then I would shoot the rifle and it would not even be on the target. Has anyone else had this problem? Is that a bad shooting model MAK or do I have a junker?

Regards.......Matt

First let me say welcome to the site!

Second, the Romak and the MAK are not the same rifles. The Romaks are Romanian, and the MAKs are Chinese produced rifles. I'm guessing that you have a Romanian rifle.

I've never used a laser bore sighter so I can't comment on the steps necessary to using one.

? for you though. How much experience do you have shooting rifles overall?

Thanks for the welcome and thanks for correcting me on the Romak not being an MAK. I have several years of experience shooting rifles and I also had my Dad along when we tried to sight it in and he has even more experience than me. I have sighted in several rifles over the years and never had any major problems doing so. We tried sighting it in with out the laser bore sighter and did not have any luck so I went and ordered the bore sighter and did not have any luck after useing it either. If you have anymore ?`s for me please feel free to ask!    Thank you

If you have a spare scope to try, I would do that on the next range trip. It's possible there is something wrong with the scope.

Okay I will give another scope a try when the weather clears up a bit. What kind of grouping should I see at 100 yards with a good scope, good ammo and ofcorse a good shooter on my romak 1? How will it be out at about 200 yards? Is there people on here that has this model and has a 3-9 scope on it?   Thanks!

If the rifle is in decent shape, you're an average or above shooter, and using decent ammo you should probably get around a 4" group at 100yds.

Before throwing another scope on the rifle, see if you can get on target and a decent group with the iron sights.

Okay sounds good. I will try that. Thanks!

Your Romak 1 should be a decent shooter. I certainly agree with the idea of using the iron sights first, although they may need to be adjusted, and if you don't have the right tool, it can be frustrating. I generally start at 25 yards, or less, and get things dialed in. The AK's have been notorious for me in trying to get an optic dialed in on them. It takes a lot of patience, and the typical bore sighters don't work too well, if, like most AK sights that used the side mount, there is an offset from the bore. Once you get accustomed to this, you realize it is no big deal for the ranges that are appropriate for an AK, but if you try to set the optics like you would on a U.S. hunting rifle with a nice Leupold scope-forget it, you will become very frustrated.

Sometimes I resort to starting at about 15 yards and more/less trial and error my way to zero. Then, once I get in the zone up close, I will increase my range to normal distances of 100 yards or meters.

I'd do 25 yards with iron sights.. i started that way with my SAR-2 at that range, even crappy me can keep them all in the black circle.

I would say that was my problem then. We have 3 AK`s but I have never sighted in a scope on one before it has always been US hunting rifles and they always go in easy. What size scope do you guys think would be good on it? I had a 3-9x40 on it and that is the one that would not go in. The one a just changed out to is a 5x32. It is a real AK scope I beleave. I can do what you guys was saying with the Iron sights with out pulling the scope off because my scope mount is a see through mount. Here is a link to the mount that I have.  Thanks!

If you're using the dust cover scope mount, you're just wasting your time IMO. Just keep it with open sights or look into one of the newer mount attachments.

Could you please explain why this is? So if I want a scope mount I need to get a side mount?   Thanks

Just grab the top cover of the rifle and wiggle. If you're getting movement, then you should understand why those type mounts suck.

The side mount units are very rugged IMO. I haven't gotten a chance to try any of the units that replace the rear sight for mounting, but I've read some decent reviews.

as far as bore sighting with a laser bore site.. How far out did you set the laser? You can get left and right prety close but you should get that laser about 30-40 feet away. Even then you will need ot dial it in, but at least at 25 yards you will be on paper..

As far as the dust cover mounts, you need to switch up to the side mount... Sorry.

I think I had the bore sighter alittle farther than I should of. Next time I will be sure that I use 25 yards or so. I will get on and find me a good side mount. They should take those crappy dust cover mounts off the market! What a waste of money! Oh well, Live and learn.    Thanks!
