Well folks, I did it.  Broke down and purchased a SAR-3 at the local show on Saturday.  With a lot of help, and a keen eye from RS39, (Thanks Ron  ! ! )  I believe we picked out a good one  ! !   Cruised down to the local range today to see what it would do.  So here we go:

Rifle:  standard SAR-3.  Replaced the hammer a.s.a.p. with one from Red Star.  "Cleaned up" the rest of the FCG.  Trigger pull is now about 4 or 4 1/2 pounds.  Long, but not too bad.  Metal finish is not the best.  Maybe a cost of Aluma-Hyde II when I get a chance. Replaced the crappy wood with a refinished set from a SAR-1 that I have.  Replacement wood has kind of an "orange" look to it.  Might just keep it on the SAR-3  ! !

Ammo:  Wolf 55 FMC, Barnual 62 HP, W-W White Box 55 FMC, and SA 55 FMC.

Mags:  picked up five of the Weiger mags with the rifle.  Now I can see why people like these mags  ! !  Build like a tank.  Want more  ! !  Also picked up one poly Bulgarian mag.  Top of mag, at the back of the feed lips, would hang-up on the center pin of the rifle.  Sanding wheel in faithful Dremel tool and about 15 seconds per side and the mag fits perfect. Locks up nice and tight.  Want more of these too  ! !  Rifle came with one "modified" AK-74 mag, from Century.   Weiger mags and Bulgy mag would hold a full 30 rounds and both worked PERFECT ! !  "Modified" mag would only run 100% if loaded with 25 rounds of less.  With 30 rounds, ammo would not feed correctly in this mag.  Will stay with Bulgy or Weiger mags in the future.

Range Report:  First 60 rounds or so rifle "ran slow" ie: weak ejection, miss-feeds from mags, etc.  After that ---- WOW ! !   Ran like a clock, except for the modified mag.  (loaded with 25 rounds it ran 100 %).  Burned up over 400 rounds today, and after the "break in" only two problems:  twice I had a round of Wolf 55 grain that would not seat completely in the chamber.  Ejected the bad round and the rifle kept on shooting.  Had a Kobra, but did not have a chance to put it on and try it out.  However, 100 yard groups, from the bench, average 3 1/2 to 4 inches, no matter what ammo I was using. Thought recoil was about half of the 7.62 X 39 round.  And the REAL fun was with "the BUMP ! ! !"  Talk about kewl  ! !   Ran four mags as fast as I could get them in the rifle, and NEVER a problem ! ! !   And talk about BLAST and FIREBALL ! !   With the White Box is was down right UNREAL ! ! ! !

Overall, VERY pleased with my new baby  ! !  I'm sure my 12 year old son will like it too.  Considered a SAR-2 (in 5.45) but at the show only TWO vendors had any 5.45 ammo  ! !  And both vendors had very little 5.45  !  Love to go to the range "just to blast" now and then, and a rifle with no ammo is not much fun  !

Like I said, very pleased with my purchase, but I still love my AK's in 7.62, and will be shooting them too  ! !

Thanks for the report. AIM appears to be out of SAR 3s currently. Seems to happen everytime I go to buy something from them. They do have the Weigers listed again.

glad your happy with your SAR3. Compared to the trigger on my AR I swore the SAR3 trigger was light... just a long pull. What was wrong with the hammer that you replaced it? J/W for future referance for my own. Have fun shootin...

Just got a new SAR-3.  Can't wait to go shoot it!  Its my first AK. It came with 2 "waffle" mags and one "bakelite" mag (I don't count the little 5 rnd mag).

Are the "waffle" mags good?  they don't have any markings other than the 5.56x45 and a "10" in a circle.  They seem real strong and fit great.  It seems strait and smooth.  I plan on Putting a Red Star hammer and trigger group in it as soon as I can.

thanks for the help!

I have 2 of those. Had to do some modification on the back of the mag to get it past the pin. Other than that one worked flawless and the other I'm having a little trouble with. When it gets to round 7 through round 1, it either won't strip off the next round, start stripping it off from the middle of the round, or eject two rounds at once. Someone suggested I open it up, clean it real good and check for rough edges. Probably go out this weekend for field testing trials again. Anyone else have anyother ideas, I'm open to suggestions, feel free to IM or e-mail. Thank you

Hello Sparsky,

Replaced the hammer do to all the articles that I have read that claim the hammer does not hit the back of the bolt "square and true".  Red Star parts work like a charm  !

And for those of you that are having mag problems ---get the Weiger mags  ! ! Now I have one Bulgy that works great, but we all know the Weiger mags work all the time  ! !   And cost - - Weiger mags are $18 - $ 20 each -- the same as a Bulgy mag  ! !

Are the plastic "waffle" mags "bulgy"?

Where can I find "Weigers" mags? and how are they marked?

Yes, M-60

Waffle mags are the Bulgy mags.
I really think you'll be VERY happy with the Weiger mags.  I think the're East German manufacture.  Will hold a FULL thirty rounds  ! !    Kind of look like a 3/4 size 7.62 mag.  Heavy metal body -- built like a tank. I picked up five of them at the local show, and ordered three more from Federal Arms Corp.  Also know AIM Surplus has them now on sale -- 3 mags or more for $17.95 each.  I have ordered from Federal Arms Corp and AIM in the past -- very satisfied.  In Shotgun News, Inter-Ordnance has them four and a mag pouch for $59.95.  I really think you would be very happy with the Weiger mags.
