| I am looking to purchase an AK. I have noticed they have what appears to be a date on the receiver. Example, one I saw was 1967. Is this the date they receiver was made and are the rest of the parts new, used, or surplus. Thanks, I'm an AR guy but would like an AK. |

It's actually going to depend on what variant your looking at/were looking at. Many recent guns are simply old parts kits that have been built on new, US-made receivers. However, there are a lot of pre-ban guns out there that were built on their own factory receivers (the Chinese Polytech and Norinco guns, Hungarian FEG guns, Egyptian Maadi guns, etc.) as well as post-ban ones that include the same makers. As was stated, the trunnion pretty much can tell you what the deal is. Most of the time, there's a date and a serial number. On some, there might not be a date but only an alpha-numeric serial number. On others, the last digits of the year and a serial number, or vice versa, might be on the trunnion. It really depends on the variant and parts kit used. On the newer-built guns, it can tell you the make/date of the original parts kit/barrel assembly it is since most of them are built using Romanian and Polish parts kits. Do some reading-up on past posts and you'll probably get a handle on it. |
