I see that some rivets are labled "hardened". Which is better hardened or soft rivets? Do the hardened rivets squash into place well, do they break easier?
Also what length bolt cutters should I make the tool out of?

You want soft rivets made from mild steel.
I'd use 24" bolt cutters to make rivet squeezers. That's just my personal preference though. Some people use 18 or 36 inch.
