I you want a better cheek-weld with this stock, put a piece of black poly-foam pipe wrap around the main part of the stock. The stuff I used was .5"ID with 1.5" OD Works Awesome!! It even folds no problem with the wrap..., after sunset of course!!!  RU4FREEDOM -- out |

the east german version was the original (on the mpikm72?) and was lever actuated. i know of no current source but they are around if you look hard enough. the polish version is similar to the east german version. the romanians improved the cheekweld slightly by off setting the strut and actuated the lock by means of a push button. |

have you EVER seen a pic of east germans with the romie folder? the reason i ask is, shortly after the wall fell, i got an east german set up, forearm, gas tube, mags, muzzle break, pistol grip, etc. but it came with the romie side folder. the guy i got this get up from, from germany - siegmun stefan, said the east german military got a lot of these stocks from romania in a kind of "socialist solidarity" kind of business move. the romie was an improvement, more rugged, less prone to breakage cuz it had a button instead of a lever and so on. the thing is, i collect east german stuff and i have never seen a pic of soldaten with the romie folder equipped ak... any opinions? i can't quite remember for sure but i think i may have gotten this get up before romania under ceaucescu fell... |

hardcorps, that is entirely possible. while i have never seen evidence of a romanian folder on a east german rifle, the commies did barter in parts and support. my guess is that the ddr was more than capable of manufacturing their own parts, though. perhaps one of the other guys knows the real scoop. |
Maybe it was a comparitive advantage thing. Higher Tech DDR wouldn't waste thier time making low tech folding stocks, so they could concentrate on fire control groups and bolts, etc. |

Back in '92 my buddy and myself both purchased East German lever-actuated side folders from some German guy who had a couple of tables at the Astrohall gunshow in Houston. ( that Siegmun Stefan name sounds familiar ) While we both have DDR side-folders, they are different. My buddies has a cast block ( the part that slides into the receiver ) while mine has a milled block. Also the style of the block between the milled and cast is distinctly different. The other folder parts are identical though. At a later Astrohall Gunshow I purchased some extra DDR side-folder parts from the same guy; extra levers, the stamped piece that attaches to the front of the block, extra wire springs, etc. I also purchased a nice 75rd DDR drum and a extra spring for it.  I remember that he had a lot of neat DDR parts, he also had some clips and parts for that polish machine-pistol that sorta resembles a UZI, I forget the name.... |
that sounds like siggy, he used to come over from germany and make the gun show circuit. not anymore though...  man, i'd love to see some pics of a real live ddr drum! |

Well even though my drum was in a distinct DDR drum pouch, The only markings on it is a single "star". The finish and machining marks closely match some supposedly Russian 40rd clips that were also purchased from the German gunshow guy , I strongly suspect that the Drum is Russian??? I'll try to take some pics next week of the drum and folders ( I'll try to get a pic of my buddies folding stock and drum as well ) and post them in this thread Oddly enough all the supposedly DDR RPK stock sets he had for sale were very nice laminated wood??? Did the DDR actually make their own RPK's??? Now 12 years later I kick myself in the butt for not buying more stuff from him, especially since a lot of the stuff he had for sale is really rare and worth a lot of $$$ now. |

How much better would you say the cheekweld is? Did you have to slit the pipe wrap to get it to fit or did you figure out another way of getting it onto the buttstock? Tomac |

The pipe wrap I used has a factory slit with adhesive strips on both surfaces at the slit. For me, the wrap takes up the slack perfectly for a great cheek weld using the iron sights. If a person was using primairly optic, I would suggest a larger diameter wrap! RU4FREEDOM -- out |

I noticed that K-Var sells a "rubber bumper" for use w/folding stocks: www.k-var.com/product.asp?3=380 Is this needed w/the Romanian folder or has anyone used this bumper before? TIA... Tomac |

Tomac, The "Rubber Bumper" is a replacemnt part that fits in the top rear portion of the stock to protect the receiver when folded...., although both of my Romy folders lock in place when folding, before reaching the receiver !! The Poly-Foam pipe wrap I used was some leftover scrap I snaged from one of my subcontractors. Home Depot probably has some, but the better quality "comerical grade" stuff seems to be somewhat "rubberized" and would most likely be found at a plumbing materials supply outlet. |
FWIW, I ordered from them a few years ago, and damn near had to go there and get it myself. Simple order, after a month, no email returns, nada. I stayed in their ass and I called the BBB. They have/had a business address in one town, and pickup mail a few miles away. Awhile after the BBB I did get my stuff, but it was easily 2 months plus from order. |

That sucks!! I ordered from them on two different ocations within the last 2 months, and both of my orders were at my door in 3 days. I can only speak from my experiences. with tapco or the stock? tapco is top notch, on eof the most responsive, customer-oriented businesses i have ever seen anywhere! the stock? no idea, and while they put out superb products i gotta go with campy on this one... |
