Does heating the trunion with a propane torch do any good
while trying to remove the barrel pin with a press or will it
just make it worse? (couldn't be much worse - the damn thing won't budge!

it should if you concentrate on directing the heat to just the trunion... or try soaking the pin with some pentrating oil...

i drilled mine out .. had father turn new 7mm pin on lathe from old bolt laying around .. he did a fit to fit .. it was half a thousanth over ..  we had to bang it in with a 5 lb sledge and a bronz slug so as not to mushroom the pin goin in .. was MUCH easier goin in than comin out .. it was a nightmare comin out .. ill NEVER spend the time i spent initially on that barrel pin again .. few tries .. if no go .. drill out and replace ..

for those turning their pins themselves .. the ROMY KITS need a pin 1.100  length and 7mm in diameter .. or a hair bigger for a snug fit goin in ..

KROIL is the answer  ! ! ! ! !

Yes -- KROIL is the WonderDrug for AK builders

I've been involed with 12-15 AK builds -- some using a press and some using a big hammer.  Romys, AMD's and the like.

I've NEVER had a problem with barrel pins when I let it soak for 4 or 5 days in KROIL.

Must have Kroil, must have Kroil, must have Kroil . . . . . . .

turmanator where in Texas are ya?  I'm over in Austin, and took the barrel pin out of my Romy a week ago.  I ended up using a punch (can't remember what size) and a 4lb hammer.  It took quite a few wacks to get it out...word of advise, if you do it this way use vice-grips to hold the punch.
I've noticed that my "hand picked" Romy has all sorts of rust issues in key places.
Looking over the gun it looks great, but when taking it apart, all the key components are rust welded; i.e. the barrel pin and the locking mech. that holds the bottom grip on.  So, maybe using wd-40 or the like would be a good idea as well.
I didn't get a press until just the other day, so it wasn't an option for me at the time...still have to put the damn thing together.

I'm in Tomball (NW Houston)
I just got a press last week. Before me and my son
were beating the F#$^ out of it with a 3 lb. hammer
I have soaked it with PB Blaster. Will try again today

Contemplating the barrel pin also.  First few wacks with three pounder on the vice and no go.    May build our own press.  I'm in South TX.  A  Saturday "Press Party" would be nice.   Heh hehhhhh.

Well, now I need a rear sight block, or whatever it is called.
The part with th orange G on it. The tool I was using to
press the pin with slipped under the pressure of the press
and bent where the piston goes thru. Anyone have a spare
I can buy? I'm going to drill this frickin' pin.

Soaking in PB Blaster, heat cold, BFH, air hammer, nothing worked on 4 of my Romys and a Tantal.  Used a 6 in industrial vise with a pipe on the handle, a range of push pins and a hand sledge to whack the vise with to get them out.  2 Romys and the Tantal were absolutely God-awful.

Of course the pin and barrel of one Romy came out with just a hammer and punch!

And to get the 1st Romy build barrel in I ended up buying a 12 ton press anyway after every other method failed.  Shoulda got it in the 1st place.  Some of these AKs are just too tight for the "easy" methods lucky builders get away with.

So if you cant get the pin out easily, buy a press and save yourself a lot of agony!

So from reading this thread, to get the barrel pin out without a press all I need to do is soak it in kroil for a few days and hammer it out with a mallet? Where do I buy this magic they call Kroil?

www.kanolabs.com         Order direct from manufacturer.   Right now you get a can of kroil and a can of kroil aerosol for $6 total + shipping ups or PP.   Can't beat that.     If it doesn't work for you they say they will cancel the charges.   What da ya gotta lose?  I'm giving it a try myself.   HTH

Maybe I've just been lucky, but after 14 builds my Campbell Housfield HD air hammer ($20 at flea mkt) and a tapered punch bit knocks em right out.
I did have to heat one with a heat gun once with PB on it, but never had to soak them.

That kroil is some amazing stuff use it on a frozen up power mower engine down the spark plug hole. Let it sit a few days it would move with pull rope  spray a bit more let sit a day or two add gas engine runs once again!!!!
