I've got about 300 magazines from the SG deals. When I got them I stripped them down, ran them through the dishwasher. I used steel wool to scrub off the rust. I wiped them down with motor oil and then put them in zip bags. I was just moving some around tonight and noticed rust spots on a few. What can I do to prevent this? |
other than adding oil I wouldn't know. What I did notice though after I ran half the mags through the dishwasher, after boiling the first half, the latter ones all got really rusty. So I took my time and did a couple mags at a time boiling then running numerous paper towels w/ oil through them meticulously for the every other mag I got after that. I don't trust the dishwasher.

I painted mine with Rustolium BBQ black paint. |
It is my understanding that motor oil is not a very good corrosion protectant at all. Of course it is great for lubrication though. Did you let all the water dry out before you sealed them in the bags or lubed them? To rust, there has to be water from somewhere. You're in UT, so there probably wasn't much water in the air when you sealed 'em... It seems like I read about a guy who used Essex, Breakfree CLP, and Mobil 1 in a corrosion test. The Mobil 1 performed the worst by far. |
| Oh yeah almost forgot. I used very liberal amounts Breakfree CLP after I finished cleaning all my mags. For some reason the ones that ran through the dishwasher developed rust I might not have put enough CLP on it or perhaps they rusted do to the fact that they were in the water for a much longer time than the mags I boiled. The dishwasher also striped most of the paint of the two Egyptians that were in at the time as well. |
| I cleaned mine with heat and a parts washer, but I haven't looked at them in a long time. I sure hope that they haven't rusted. After being cleaned, I coated them in gunslick spray oil for anti-corrosion use.. forget what its called. Hope it works.. after the fact, I now realize that I should have just left some in cosmoline rather than cleaning it off. I only use a little over a dozen mags, the rest sit in a plastic tub doing nothing. |
| I had a few that started to rust after a trip to the range. After all the reloading and handling I guess my sweaty/salty hands did the trick. I noticed it about 2-3 weeks afterwards and quickly used some CLP on a 000 steel-wool pad to remove the rust and lube the mag. It's been about 3 months now and still nothing, even sitting in my garage during a FLA summer. |
