Can this be done, or does it require a lot of know-how and/or tooling?

Yes and yes. I know this subject hasn't came up much, but i think there may be a thread about this very subject on this board soemwhere.

although i rate it as a pain in the ass job, it can be done easily enough 'if' you have the right attitude and a friend that can weld sheet metal.

you have to mill/dreill openings in the receiver side walls for the lock/pivot shaft hardware and add a new rear trunnion.

Hmm...  okay.  So it might be easier to buy a receiver that's already made for an underfolder and then buy a Russian AKM parts kit for $200 or so, right?  Any idea where I can find such a stripped receiver (not flats)?

Or you could get a $99 Romanian side folder from Sportsman's Guide that's supposed to fit all stamped AK variants.  Of course, that might mess up your US parts count.

$99 will get you three of them at Novelty Guns, if your ears can stand the music long enough to put an order in.

The Sportsmans Guide has an underfolding stock for stamped AK's that says no gunsmithing required.

www.sportsmansguide.com/cb/cb.asp?a=143524

Anybody have any experience with them?

Thanks.  It says "no gunsmithing" but then also says "This product is sold as a replacement for an existing folding stock" - could that be why it doesn't require "gunsmithing" to install?

They seem to have screwed up the text, seeing as they also say it's a steel side-folding buttstock in the description for the underfolder.  Clearly in the picture it's a standard underfolder, which will require fairly extensive work for a standard AK.

Seeing that $29-$39 dollar stock (the sidefolder) "on sale" for $99 has completely turned me off to ever buying anything those fuckwads sell ever again.  What a big fat crock of crap, THAT is price gouging after the ban at it's finest...  Did they themselves not use to carry it for around $39?  Oh and if I read "Fierce!" as the description of a stock again I'm going to vomit something Fierce!
