I own a stock SAR-1, as well as a PMKMS kit.  I will end up with an AKMS clone one way or another.  Other than the obvious option of building up the PMKMS on a new kit, I'm wondering if it is feasible to convert the SAR-1 to take an underfolding stock.  Is this a realistic task, given the presence of the optics rail that would need to be removed?  It's not something I would do myself, so if it required a lot of gunsmith labor I would probably pass on it.

it involves, cutting off the rivets that hold in the rear tang(stock holder oner thingie), drilling new holes for the underfolder trunnion rivets, and drilling two medium sized holes and one big hole on each side of the receiver to stick the stock through.  then you have to weld a piece of sheet metal over the back of the receiver to close it up.

I'd get Jnewt to build your polish kit for you instead

Bummer, I guess the SAR-1 will be going up on the EE.

Doesnt the trunnion have a back plate to it so he wont need to weld anything up?

Yes, it looks just like this.

Keep the SAR. Save up your money and get the PKMS built. You'll regret selling it off.
