I decided that I would make some revisions to my SAR-1 today.

I wanted to thin down the top portion of the Romanian "dong" and make it more ergonomic.

I used a rasp bit in my drill then smoothed it down with my dremel, then hit it with 60 and 150 grit sandpaper.

Since I stripped the finish off I went ahead and sanded down the rest of the handguard, gas tube wood, and stock.

Then I used clear shellac with a touch of iodine to finish the wood. I still need to buff out the shine with some steel wool.

It's obvious you haven't heard of Ronin's Grips. Otherwise, it looks good.

The pic on the top has a "Beruit" feel to it. Especially with the blood stains in the concrete

I have good sir. I have an order into them as we speak for a bulgy saw grip.

Ordered an ergo grip for this as well as an ultimak. Won't stay true to form for long.

Ronin makes some excellent grips. I have used a couple from him and find them to be the most well built AK grips I have ever used.

Nice!

So I should have this completely setup by the end of the week.

- utlimak and my trs-25
- ergo PG
- gear sector sling adaptor
- damage usa muzzle brake

I'm going to look for another dong, I want to cut it down and make a thinner / shorter VFG out of it with a more vertical profile. Not like a shark fin, but think Daniel Defense or KAC stubby style VFG. I've had all the rails and railed HG's in the past on my 74 and feel that the Romanian VFG is still the best bang for the buck.

I agree with you about the dong, it's definitely the best bang for the buck. There was a lot of them for sale at the franklin show, several vendors had some pretty nice ones.

Wish I could have made it down for that show.  I would like to try a VFG (dong) just to see if I like the ergonomics.  I would probably leave the pressure-pad for the light on the Micro because I have gotten used to it there and I "shouldn't" trip the light accidentally like I would occasionally do with it attached to the fore-end grip.

My current SAR-1 setup.

The "dong" is a great VFG. I thinned out the radius on mine with a dremel so that it would fit in the hand better.

If you want one on the cheap to refinish / try out look here - no hardware or here - with hardware

Very cool.  Will the metal hardware from my fore-end transfer to a dong-type?  Great price, thanks for the link!  And the pics!

the dong type really doesn't have any hardware, it will fit right on.

The hardware IIRC is the buttplate for the stock, swing swivel, and the pistol grip screw.

I've bought both sets before and IIRC if you already have a stock set, you just need the one sans hardware.

All this SAR-1 talk and pictures is getting me excited to receive mine soon.  I bought one off of the EE a little while ago, and was told it was going to ship out today.  Then I'll get to decide for myself if I'm an AR or AK guy

Since it is a SAR-1 how did you go about installing a slant brake?

Odd, mine has one but I can't take it off.
Push detent pin & rotate clockwise...tight, hate to bend it.

The barrel has been threaded and the pin installed in the fsb.

It's complete.

Just waiting on the additional mags and 4k rounds of ammo.

I'm going to the range Saturday morning to get my rds zero'd and run a few hundred through her.

Everything can be easily reverted back to AKM standard in about 5 min, but since I wanted a shooter (mainly to preserve my 5.56 stash) I wanted to make this rifle as practical as possible.

regardless, it was fun.

That break seems to work well and isn't so radical looking to where it would look out of place. Whoever did that duracoat did a nice job. I think I'm going to have my two aks cerakote.

My quest to turn my SAR-1 into a proper 69-75 AKM clone is well underway.

I'm still waiting on my wood to arrive, then I'll have to decide on what finish I'll go for. I'm leaning towards copying the 76 Tula AKM in the "iodine thread".

However, these arrived today.

Tula AG4 # 1:

Tula AG4 # 2: - the most "orange" of the bunch

Izzy Ag4 # 3:- this one is beautiful - more of a brown bakelite as opposed to the stereotypical orange color.

I took the brake off for pictures.

It's going back on when it's range time. Along with the ergo grip.

I did however get rid of the ultimak and picked up a Midwest side rail. It allows for almost the exact same cheek weld I'm used to with my acog.

I need to zero it.

It's official.

I'm going to be picking up a complete polish stock set.

I don't really like the reddish brown set I did last night, but did it more for "oh why not, I should have a fake Russian red set"

Once the polish wood comes in, its going to find a permanent home on the rifle.

With that said, I am going to use the other polish NOS handguard set and add a small piece of magpul rail to the bottom and run a RVG on it.

This way I just have to swap out lower HG's and go from traditional to practical very easily and still match.

For practical purposes (range time, fun in the woods, etc...) I'll have the rifle setup with the hybrid lower HG, MI side mount rail, TRS-25, gear sector sling, ergo grip, and damage industries brake.

something like this (only one wood choice on the program so its not accurate)

For clone / photo shoots, I'll revert it back to traditional PMKM dress
