I just got a NIB SA85M. The receiver says FEG and Made in Hungary then it has KBI , Inc. Was KBI the importer? Has all matching numbers. I am not too familiar with these. How much is this worth? I traded 550 rds. of XM193, 200 Wolf, 200 HSM, and 150 Ultramax (all .223 and purchased last year) for this. I assume I did well. Any help appreciated. Thanks. I'd post pics but for some reason it won't let me.

yes, KBI is the importer. They are really nice AK's and typically go for around $550-650.

You got a smoking deal.

KBI (Kassnar Brothers, Inc.- I believe/post-89) is the successor company to Kassnar Imports (pre-89). Tony

You will leave it just as it is if you want to make money on it over the next ten years. If it is unmessed-with, it should be on the paper at 100 and function flawlessly. If you don't care about the investment, you can take off the thumbhole stock (but keep it!) and put on a pistol grip and stock for looks. This carbine is all-FEG inside - no US parts were required at the time of it's importation because it was in sporting mode. FEG has since closed out of the gun business and the importation laws have changed anyway. FEG made military and police weapons for half a century in Hungary. Your carbine came off the same lines used to make military AKs and it used many of the same parts. It has a bright 'sporting' finish but is all-business inside. As you noted, the bolt carrier, bolt and action cover are numbered to the gun. You will not find a smoother, more reliable AK-style carbine.

Awesome deal! I picked mine up at a local gun store after I got out of the Army in 1986.I paid approx. $450. I saw one at a gun show recently,NIB for about $1200!

So yeah, you got the deal of a lifetime! Good for you!

I've since shot it since my first post and it is awsome. Really accurate for an AK47. I took off the thumbshole stock but kept it.

You got an SA 85, or 'pre-ban'. The SA 85M is post-ban and has a thumbhole stock.

ETA: 10/24/08: I'm wrong - they were all SA85M, even the pre-ban.

I've got an SA-85 I bought in the early 1990's for around $250. It's never been fired and is still in the box. It's hard to believe that it could bring close to $1000!

Is it a pre-ban or post-ban?

If it says Kassnar on it it can bring up to 1600. If it's a kbi import then it can bring as much as 650.

Post ban (KBI) are out there and come up for sale frequently - I'm not sure how many were imported though.

Pre ban (Kassnar) come up for sale rarely - 7,000 total imported (3,000 full stock / 4,000 folders). Even though everybody wants a folder - the full stock version is more rare.

Cheers,

I have one that I'm considering selling. 99% sure that it has never been fired. Just bought a Sig 556 and need to sell this or one of my AR's. I have 3 AK's 2 AR's so I need balance. I never thought I would sell this gun because it can be made so close to the true russian AK's. IM or email if interested. I am posting tomorrow.
