Just got out to the range (my backyard) to shoot my new (to me) SGL21.

The problem is that it will not fire in semi auto. When I pull the bolt back to feed the first round, that round will fire. The round that is loaded into the chamber by the bolt will not fire.
It will eject the spent casing, and feed the new round, but it seems like it won't reset the trigger.
I have to manually rack the slide (which ejects the good round) and repeat each time I fire.

Any idea what is causing this?

UPDATE:

I tried what C-4 suggested (thank you sir), and I think i’ve found the problem. When I rack back the slide while holding down the trigger ( like I do when firing), the FCG locks up. I have to manually push the trigger a little bit forward and it’ll “pop” back into place. It functions as it should after it pops.

Do I need to just polish up the contact surfaces of the FCG, or is something broken? Please forgive my noobiness, this is my first AK.

Is it an aftermarket trigger? Like a Tapco G2? If so the hammer might be turned around the wrong way.

It's the Arsenal FCG, but I'll check it just to make sure.

Sounds like something is up in the trigger group.

You might find someone local to help you diagnose the issue.

+1

I had the same problem with an RSA FCG.  When you squeeze the trigger, the hammer comes down and fires a round.  When the bolt goes back into battery while your finger is on the trigger, the hammer doesn't get caught on the disconnector because of the position of the hammer.  I just had to adjust one of the screws but it had me confused for a bit.

Try this:  With the rifle unloaded of course, cycle the bolt/bolt carrier while your finger is squeezing the trigger.  If the hammer 'follows' the bolt, then it's not getting caught by the disconnector.  Then try the same thing with your finger not squeezing the trigger.  It sounds like the hammer is staying back when your finger is off the trigger since the first round goes off no problem.

Since the rifle is not new, the previous owner may have switched things out.

(If I'm not using the correct terms, someone please correct me.)

Years ago I bought one of those black plastic buffers and it turned my insanely reliable WASR into an unreliable POS.  After removing the buffer, it was 100% reliable/functional again.

Check to see if a buffer is installed.  If so, remove it and see if you still have the same problems.

It looks like you've now isolated the problem to the FCG.  I can't tell you how to fix it without looking at it (even then it would be iffy).  I would likely just switch out the FCG entirely with a Tapco single hook FCG.  So my solution is more 'brute force'.

You can buy a new Tapco G2 FCG for about $25 to $30 I think.  I have never shot an Arsenal FCG, but from what I've read (here on these forums mostly), the G2 is preferrable over the Arsenal FCG for many/most people.  For a fix that's this inexpensive, I'd just buy and install the G2 myself.
