I have an SKS and I love shooting it.  Prices are a bit insane right now as I picked mine up for $99.00.  The ammo used to be sooooo cheap but like everything else it has climbed.

Make sure the bore looks good and if you can, take it down and check the firing pin.  They have a tendency to either break or get rusted into place and if this happens you now have a fully auto SKS.  They come apart very easily so it wouldn't be a big deal to break it down and take a look.  Just shake it (the firing pin assembly, not sure what its called) back and forth and the firing pin should move freely unless it is still coated in cosmo.

You can still have some slam fires with these guns so be careful.

If you do get one and its covered in cosmoline take the stock and bake in an oven.  This will bleed out the cosmo.

I put a Williams Fire Sight on mine and love it.

I just sold a mint Unfired one for $300 so look around they are still out there. The 59/66 was never a fav of mine, not that the sks is a fav at all, and I would look for a Yugo 59 or even one of the recent Chinese imports.

I have one and love it. I have shot it with out a single f.t.f. or misfire or slam fire. When the S.H.T.F. I will grab the SKS before I will grab my AR15

This.........
I've had a Norinco,a Yugo 59/66, and a type 45 Russian.  I still have the Russian.  I would look into a Chinese Century import.  If you can get a Russian, go for it.
The Yogo 59/66 was a POS. I hated from day 1.  I sold it years ago. If you must get a Yugo, try a 59 ( the one without the grenade launcher adaptor ) IMHO

They are good budget rifles.

If you end up getting one, get the murrays firing pin mod.   It's $35 well spent, IMO.

The Yugo's are a great buy, they are well made rifles, and a pretty neat. Mine was built in 1983, and had only some handling marks and wasn't shot or field stripped much at all (I'm still breaking in the take down latch!).

Only SKS's I would avoid would be the Chinese models, they are a bit cheaper made, and aren't built as nicely as the Yugo, Russian etc.. Yugo's.

With light handling marks, no rust, and all matching serial numbers I paid $330 (including shipping). It is about normal these days (price hasn't gone up much), just don't touch the supposed "M59 models" you see at a few places, they are just M59/66's that have been rebarreled and sold as something they aren't.

SKSboards.com is the place to go for SKS experts.

If you chose to get Tech-sights for it (I highly recommend you do) a few notes specific to the Yugo's, the rear take down pin likely has to be cut off (I had to with a dremel), and also the rear sight is one piece, so you won't be driving out the pin.
