Hi folks. New here. Yesterday I picked up a Saiga 308-1 with 16" barrel. I'm a little confused and could use some help. The little bit of info I can find on the internet says that they shoot .308 Winchester ammo. However the receiver on the rifle is marked 7.62X51. I don't want to shoot the higher pressure 308 ammo if it's not suppose to have it. Which is it? Are they .308 Win. or 7.62 NATO? Thanks!

they're good for both.

my s-308 has both 7.62x51 and .308WIN on the receiver.
i'd be surprised if yours doesnt have both on it too.

Nope....looked over the whole rifle. It is only marked 7.62X51 by the safety. I don't have a manual, but the one I found online states Saiga 308-1 20" Calibre 308. Mine's a 16" though.

They are the same cartridge.  It was 308 Win before Nato decided to adopt it

Not really.

Military 7.62 x 51 ammunition is loaded to maximum average pressure of 50,000 PSI. Military brass is thicker.

Commercial ammunition has a SAAMI/ANSI maximum pressure of 62,000 PSI.
