Scott sent me one of his K-Rail forends to try out.
I just got back from the range with it and my impressions so far are very positive.
Installation is straightforward although on some guns you may have to remove the forward sling loop (if it's attached to the forward handguard retaining plate).
It attaches via a clamp that is tightened around the barrel. The rest of the system is attached to the clamp.
It is extremely solid with absolutely zero movement once everything is tightened down.
I have tried a number of mounts on the rails and everything mounted up perfectly.
For my range trip I used an aimpoint CompM2 with the factory low aimpoint mount. This does not allow co-witness but it does keep the aimpoint low and allows it to sit back over the rear sight. It makes for a pretty well balanced gun.
I also threw on a cheap pro-mag vertical grip.
I don't have a postage scale handy but the unit is quite light and doesnt make the rifle feel overly front heavy.
As I said in my other post regarding the rifle itself....it was about zero degrees so I didnt want to spend too much time out there.
I brought 6 mags loaded with wolf.
After firing the first mag and zeroing the aimpoint I checked all the screws briefly to ensure they werent loosening under recoil. Everything remained rock solid.
I proceeded to fire the remaining 4 mags rapidly.
I was a bit concerned that the barrel clamp would transfer a lot of heat to the rail system but found that it actually remained much cooler than I anticipated. After four mags worth I was still able to handle the aluminum rails wthout scorching myself. After mag 5 it was definitely toasty but thats to be expected after 150rds through any AK.
I again checked for any loosening and found that the whole system was still tight and true.
The machining is fantastic as is the finish.
Overall, I think if you're looking for a quality quad rail to put on your AK, this would be very difficult to beat.
I'll take some better pictures once I've warmed up and had a couple cups of coffee. We're expecting a hell of a snowstorm tomorrow so I was definitely glad I had a chance to hit the range today.
Snapped some pictures of my Brother in law giving it a go.
