I have a SAR-1 and want to remove the side scope base. I am not going to take it off until I am sure I can fill the holes left in the receiver once it is removed. This is what I can see so far: The rearmost rivet goes through the rear trunnion, not a problem. The front rivet just holds the front of the base on, also not a problem. At the center of the base it looks like a stud comes out of the side of the base and protrudes through the side of the receiver, looks to be about 5/16 in diameter, not sure what to do here. And the receiver support rod?? that goes from side to side through the receiver, I can't tell if this comes into play at all. If anyone has any experience on what is involved, I would like to hear from you. Thanks Larry |

i strongly advise you to leave the optic rail in place! that said... "The rearmost rivet goes through the rear trunnion, not a problem." the right side head can be ground off carefully and if done correctly there will be enough length left to reform a new head on it after removing the optic rail. "The front rivet just holds the front of the base on, also not a problem." correct. "At the center of the base it looks like a stud comes out of the side of the base and protrudes through the side of the receiver, looks to be about 5/16 in diameter, not sure what to do here." this is just a countersunk rivet. after it is drilled out, you'll be left with an ugly protrusion (the countersink) stixking out the side of your rifle. it can be hammered flat and plugged with a rivet. "And the receiver support rod?? that goes from side to side through the receiver, I can't tell if this comes into play at all." you won't touch it. the backside of the optic rail has a clearance pocket in it to clear the head of the anti-crush tube rivet. |

Thanks Campy, I hate the fact that it has a mount on the side, but I will heed your advice and leave it in place. Just curious though, why do you recommend not removing it? Safety concerns of cosmetics? I am going to look at the new guns from Global when they come out and also the SAM-7's. My SAR will be easier to sell if the side rail is still on the gun. This is my first AK and I am kind of frustrated that I can't do as much work on it as I had hoped. I like to do as much work on all of my guns as I can. I can shoot the AK good enough with the iron sights and feel no need to add any other sighting system. The AK is a battle rifle, plain and simple, and utterly reliable. I adhere to the Keep It Simple Stupid theory. The Ak-47,one of the greatest battle rifles ever made. Produced by the millions. Used by armies around the world. Batteries not included. Kinda doesn't sound right does it. Larry |

I am not going to remove the rail. I already have the gun sold to two different people, when I decide it's for sale. No sense wasting anymore time or money on a gun I'm not going to be keeping. The funds will go towards a SA-M7C or Classic if I can find one. Iron sights forever. Z |
