After reading about the sheperd's crook being a potential weak link in an AK, I got some Powers Custom pin retainer plates. I replaced the Romy"s with no problem at all. The Bulgarian was a bit of a bitch but not real bad. But damn, the SGL-20 is another story! I westled with it for a while and finally stopped before I damaged anything. I guess there must be a trick that I am not aware of to remove the sheperd's crook in an SGL-20. Any tips guys?

Sounds like the shepards hook is not really a weak link after all.

IF the wire retainer sits on top of the trigger pin, runs under the hammer pin and hooks around the center support remove it the way the Soviets intended you to.
Pick up the retainer using a small screwdriver or the punch from the cleaning kit. Move it out of the groove or hold it up off the pin and push the trigger pin out. Once that pin is out let the retainer sit on the bottom of the receiver, depress the retainer to free the hammer pin and withdraw the pin. Swing the retainer up and remove it from the support.

Go to autozone and buy a small "pick" set...

One of the pick's will have a right angle end and that works wonders on pulling out shepherds hooks.

You'll have it out in 20 seconds.
