Others will add I am sure, but basically baffles like a car muffler. History/Discovery had a program this fall with a really good breakdown of the how/why these work for guns.

man, there are so many different types! the basic design though, for a muzzle-mounted suppressor, is an expansion chamber (sometimes) where the initial muzzle blast is confined then a series of mesh "baffles" to slow down, cool, and dissipate the gasses before it exits the muzzle of the "can". usually the baffles have a bullet-sized hole in the center where the bullet passes through. sometimes there's a "wipe" at the end of the can that the bullet punches through that then closes behind the bullet to trap the gasses inside the can. the wipe is usually a solid rubber plug and wears out after several rounds. it can also affect the accuracy of the piece to a certain degree.

anyway, them's the basics...hope i didn't get the terms "baffles" and "wipes" mixed up...too damn lazy to google it...
