| I was just reading that the SKS can be prone to slam firing and was wondering if the AK is known to sometimes have this problem. |
| The SKS is a very durable rifle and is quite accurate. I strongly suggest that you dissassemble the bolt and make sure it is clean and free of cosmoline and laquer (from the primers).Lube the firing pin and your good to go. I had a NIB SKS run away because i forgot to tear down the bolt and clean it. After cleaning it functioned flawlessly. |
Yep. Or if the firing pin gets jammed forward because of dirt or debris in the firing pin channel. Oiling the firing pin can attract dirt. Using commercial ammo with soft primers can increase the chances of a slam-fire, too. Pretty much all the Russian stuff (Wolf et al) uses hard primers. Any ammo with hard primers ("Mil-Spec") is OK for use with the standard floating firing pins in either the AK or SKS. Murray's Guns makes a spring-loaded firing pin for the SKS that virtually eliminates the possibility of slam-fires and therefore eliminates the concern about commercial ammo with soft primers. As far as I know, only the Chinese (Polytech) made a spring-loaded AK firing pin. The pins turn up on Gunbroker from time to time. |
