I have a standard MAK-90 and now have enough cash to do something to it.

Details
Left side receiver
CJA SFLD MI above pistol grip

MAK-90 SPORTER

Norinco medallion(?)

Right side no markings outside of S and  F

Going to this page I see that I have a stamped receiver and it is NOT slant cut. Just like the top rifle in the second picture

I had removed the stock to see if it was slant cut. Found the stock was held on by a "crappy" wood screw, and long screw through pistol grip section.

I want to put on the following tapco furniture kit but am a little gun shy, and lacking in certain knowledge. I have seen comments of people mentioning having to "mill" or dremel parts, and there is the ace receiver block that I have seen mentioned as needed on some.

With the info I gave. Do you think a tapco kit will fit and I can do it at home?

I understand that to make it 922(r) complient I will need to also repace the trigger assembly. No problem with that info. Will get a double hook kit.

Chinese stamped receivers are a little thicker so you have to "fit" the stocks if they aren't Chinese parts. That is not a big deal though. Just file a little bit at a time and see if it will go in yet. Also, run far away from crapco. I would just buy a set of Chinese wood for it like it was meant to have originally. They pop up on the boards all the time.

"crapco" may be low end, but my brothers MAADi and them go together fine. The stock is the part I'm not to happy with. Would like to go with the tubular stocks by ACE, but the price is outside of what i can afford.

I may go with a wooden stock, but would rather have a folding stock or a skeleton stock(that will not break the budget for this upgrade)

I would avoid the Tapco folders.  They are not very strong.  OTH, the Tapco telestock is pretty nice IMO.

this is what i came up with for my mak 90. i wish it folded but it was way cheaper than a true 74 folder.

i am very happy with the finished product. i have since added a birdcage flash hider and an uncle mikes rear sling swivel. i am fooling around with single point attachment.

i hope these threads help. theres lots of good folks with good ideas round here.

The two links revert back to the general AK- discussion page.

Is that a 74 model stock?

sorry about the links, the topics are now gone from "my topics" and i can't get them. it is very strange they were both there last night. i will search site to see if i can find them.

it is a 74 style fixed polymer stock from midwest armory. it took some grinding as stated above.

damn i guess my posts are lost in archive, or maybe when i made links i erased them either way it sucks. there was lots of good ideas for redoing mak 90's in those posts.

Sadly with budget constraints I am likely going by way of the Tapco kit for now. May get an AR type of stock instead of the folder.

The dang Ak is more closet queen then it should be, but health, and lack of good places to plink, have made it so.

For a good wood stock then checkout Ironwood Designs...they've got just what you need. Stay away from Crapco M4 stocks. They're cheap made and feel like they will snap if you put any kind of weight on it.

Received my Ace stock this weekend with a universal receiver block.  It took me about 15 minutes to assemble and install on my MAK90.  It fit perfectly without any need for modification.  Before I settled on Ace, I had looked into all the other options and I was just not impressed until I found Ace.

It might cost a little more than others but, its well worth it.  And hey, laying off the Whoppers and Big Macs for just a couple days will make up the difference in price.

15 minutes? any "tooling" needed?

Nope, no tooling.  All that was needed was a 5/32" and a 1/16" allen wrench to install everything.

The particular stock that I purchased was

Which is item #AKRBU-FX(S).  I am very pleased with the stock and how my MAK90 came out after switching things out.  I removed the thumbhole stock and wood hand guards.  I replaced the gas tube with a Ultimak gas tube/rail.  Installed a plain black composite choate lower handguard also from Ultimak, a Ergo pistol grip and the Ace stock.

i am not familiar with that universal receiver block. i thought ace blocks you had to cut the top tang off . unless it's milled then it drops in. what model mak 90 do you have th64?
*EDIT* i just went to the site and found the universal block, they are new to me and look great. i really like the look regretfully i swore off ace as result of a bad experiance, maybe i should forgive and forget

so th64 you got pics of finished rifle?

Here goes.

I'm going to get the ACE stock with the Universal receiver block.

AKFX Folding Skeleton Stock

ACE's famous AKFX folding skeleton stock. Includes all parts and hardware to mount it to your stamped AK. AKRBU Universal Receiver block (AKRBU), folding stock mechanism (FSM), Skeleton stock AKFX(specify length), 1 1/4" ambi sling mount and 1/2" recoil pad.

It comes with the block. Now claiming ignorance here. The part of the receiver that jutted back and had that primative wood screw through it into the thumbhole stock. That jutting piece is the trunion.  I hope.

I will not need to have it cut off because the Universal receiver block fits it.

Correct?

Someone mentioned that some grinding may be needed as receicers on the MAK-90 are thicker then most. Will I need to dremel on it?

Anyway.

I'm getting the standard length stock.

AKFX Standard Length Skeleton Stock - 11.25" measured from back edge of AK's receiver to the lowest point on the curve of the butt pad.

AKRBU-FX(S)-FS........$164.90

As for the pistol grip and foregrip. Will go tapco on them. I have no wizbang attatchments to hook to the front, so a rail system is not needed for now.

Any last words before I place the order?

Still have to get the trigger assembly before I do all of the replacement. Don't want to end up 922(r) noncomplient spit spit

No, it is not the trunion, but the tang and it is that tang that connects the stock to the receiver.  As you noted, with the universal block, you will not cut the tang off.  You will not have to remove any material from the universal reciver block as well.  The block fits the receiver of the MAK90 perfectly (at least that was my experience) and you will find that the block includes shim screws, to help make a better fit for the thinner receivers (for the MAK90 you can either discard those screws or simply tighten them all of the way down).

Hope that helps.

I ment to say Tang, not trunion.

Thanks, no grinding..

Will place the order this weekend.

I almost went for the non-folding stock, but just the idea of a non-politically correct item made my day.

I likely will be back when it comes time to change the trigger group out. Unless I can find a picture step by step online.
